Lessons Learned

After receiving their degrees and commissions virtually via an online ceremony, the newest Officers in the CAF and graduates of RMC reflect on some of the lessons learned during their time as Paladins.

Read some of the lessons learned below, written by a selection of this year's graduating athletes.
Michie Lessons Learned
"Always striving to better yourself for others and better the lives of others around you can sometimes seem underappreciated and taxing. Being willing and seeking to help others without accolades is something that is rare amongst people. Although sometimes it feels as if no one notices, the healthy relationships you make with people as a person who is willing to help others is worth more than any award you could receive. Forget about the awards and positions, just work to better yourself and bring people up, don't push them down. At the end of the day you'll be appreciated more than you can imagine."
- Mathew Michie, Hockey
Banks Lessons Learned
"Throughout my time at RMC, I have learned countless lessons about myself and what it means to be a leader. Probably the biggest lesson I've learned, which I will surely carry over to my career in the CAF, is the notion that good leadership has many different forms. Sure, mentors can be extremely helpful when starting to determine what an effective leader looks like, and attempting to mirror someone you believe is a good leader can be beneficial in some situations. However, at the end of the day, you need to be yourself and discover what your own leadership style is, rather than copying someone else. Just because you have a different way of leading than someone else, does not mean you are any less effective as a leader. The positions that I've had the privilege of holding at RMC and on the WVB team certainly helped me come to this conclusion."
- Andrea Banks, Women's Volleyball
Duff Lessons Learned
"The one lesson that I learned in fencing and repeat constantly is 'you win, or you learn' and I think that this applies to every aspect of life. Things won't always go your way, but it doesn't mean that it was wasted time or effort. As long as you can find one positive thing, or a single lesson to carry forward in life then you have been successful."
- Fraser Duff, Fencing
Weissenborn Lessons Learned
"The other men's rugby teams within the OUA are extremely skilled and experienced, but the main reason that RMC remains competitive within the league is the tenacity and fight that we bring to every game. The adversity we face on and off the field brings out the best in us, and my teammates have consistently been the toughest and most hardworking people that I've ever met. Not only this, but they have the character to be able to sit down with their opponents after a match and show them respect, despite whatever violence happened during play."
- Thomas Weissenborn, Rugby
Hamilton Lessons Learned
"The most useful thing that I'll take from RMC is time management through my education. I'll also never forget to show up to the Dining Hall 5 minutes before closing time."
- David Hamilton, Men's Volleyball
Baker Lessons Learned
"Never underestimate yourself, or those around you. If you had told me that I would have been part of the Top 5 and FYOP CFL in my fourth year, I (as well as everyone around me) would have laughed at the thought of it. Equally, if I had been told the people that I would work well with in fourth year, I would have thought it crazy. Everything that happens at this college is unexpected, including the changes that will happen to you and to the people around you. Never count anyone (or yourself) out for any challenge you may face."
- Eve Baker, Women's Soccer
Ardell Lessons Learned
"I learnt how strong the correlation between attitude and performance is. Games where we came in with a positive attitude, we performed better. Even if the game was not going our way, if we could have fun grinding it out, we performed far better. Stay positive, because your performance depends on it."
- Jonathan Ardell, Men's Soccer
Maguire Lessons Learned
"How to be a great teammate; our team was the tightest knit group of individuals year after year. I feel like I really grew up and learned from the older guys during my four years here."
- Seamus Maguire, Hockey
Sturrock Lessons Learned
"Be positive, treat others with respect and take every opportunity to improve."
- Jazlyn Sturrock McDermot, Women's Volleyball
Park Lessons Learned
"Through this journey, there were so many lessons from the varsity team. I will never forget the lesson of gaining true friendship and not depending on other's opinions. In my experience, it was challenging to balance between friendship and leadership. Those real friends who remain beside you will lead you to your success and stand along your side for your best. Another lesson I will never forget is ignoring other's opinions about you. It does not matter how other people perceive you; the only thing that matters is how you can improve yourself, as well as being there for your true friends."
- Jenny Hunki Park, Fencing
Hand Lessons Learned
"Always make the effort to improve upon your performance. You may not be perfect one game, but you should try to improve in the next and continue to do so for every game thereafter."
- William Hand, Rugby
McDermot Lessons Learned
"Any experience in life is what you make of it. If you can make the best out of most situations, nothing in life can faze you."
- Justin McDermot, Men's Volleyball
Rusu Lessons Learned
"Focus on the things you need to do and do not worry what other people are doing."
- Claudia Rusu, Women's Soccer
Muller Lessons Learned
"If you work hard enough, smart enough, and want something more than anyone else, you can get it."
- Matthew Muller, Hockey
Rook T Lessons Learned
"Don't be afraid to ask for advice. Go ask your coaches, senior players, and senior peers for help! That's what they are there for."
- Teigen Rook
