With the undefeated Guelph Gryphons coming to town Saturday afternoon, the RMC Paladins knew they were in for a tough assignment at Inner Field. Despite that, the Paladins put forth a strong effort, but in the end were unable to tip the Gryphons dropping a 33-10 decision.
As the match got underway, the visitors were able to quickly jump out in front with a fifth minute try to take a 7-0 lead. From there though, RMC was able to clamp down defensively and prevent the Gryphons from building their lead.
Rewarded for their strong defensive play, the Paladins were able to transition to offence and tie the match just three minutes before the half. With the ball deep in Guelph territory, the Paladins would get the ball across the goal line thanks to
Gabriel Veyt. Following an
Andrew Stevenson conversion, the match was all square, 7-7 at the half.
Out of the break, Guelph quickly retook the lead with a 42
nd minute try. The conversion, however, was no good so the Gryphon's lead stayed at five. RMC would cut into lead in the 50
th minute with a Stevenson penalty kick, as the Paladins pulled within two.
From that point on though, Guelph was able to start taking over. Scoring three tries in a 24-minute span, Guelph was able to pull ahead 33-10 and ultimately secure a victory over RMC.
The Paladins will resume their season on October 19 when they host their regular season finale and senior day against the Trent Excalibur.
Les Paladins du CMR avaient du gros pain sur la planche samedi après-midi sur la pelouse du Terrain Intérieur avec la visite des Gryphons de Guelph, équipe invaincue au sommet du classement des SUO. Malgré un effort soutenu, les Paladins ont plié l'échine par la marque de 33-10 aux mains des Gryphons.
Tôt dans le match, les visiteurs se sont imposés en inscrivant un essai à la cinquième minute pour prendre les devants 7-0. De là, le CMR s'est repris en main défensivement afin d'empêcher les Gryphons de s'échapper au pointage.
Récompensés par leur solidité défensive, les Paladins ont réalisé leur transition vers l'attaque et ont créé l'égalité à trois minutes de la mi-temps. Avec le ballon profondément en territoire de Guelph, les Paladins ont franchi la ligne de but sur un effort de
Gabriel Veyt. La conversion d'
Andrew Stevenson a ainsi porté la marque à 7-7 à la mi-temps.
À la pause, Guelph a rapidement repris les devants avec un essai à la 42e minute. La conversion a toutefois été ratée si bien que Guelph menait par cinq points. Le CMR a réduit cet écart à deux points sur le botté de penalty de Stevenson. C'était 12-10 pour les visiteurs.
Guelph s'est alors écarté avec trois essais en 24 minutes en route vers une marque finale de 33-10.
Les Paladins concluront leur saison le 19 octobre à l'occasion de leur dernier match à domicile et de la journée des finissants en accueillant l'Excalibur de Trent.
