The RMC Paladins resumed their 2024-25 season over the weekend with a trip to St. Catharines for the Brock Invitational.
The first event of the tournament, taking place Saturday morning was the men's épée competition. With seven different fencers entered, RMC saw their best finish come from third-year
Daniil Makarenko, who placed 10
th overall. Makarenko completed the round robin with a perfect 5-0 record. From there, he went on to win his round of 64 and round of 32 matches, before dropping a tightly contested 15-14 match to Western's Hugo Allard.
Andrew Hu,
Scott Mawhinney and Isaac Whitehead also qualified for the bracket stage.
With five athletes competing in men's sabre, RMC had three of them reach the bracket stage.
Daniel Galaman (3-2 in pool play),
Dongha Oh (4-1) and Eunchan Park (3-3) all qualified for the round of 64, with both Galaman and Oh winning their respective matches. Oh would then pick up another victory, moving on to the round of 32, where TMU's Jafer Kamoonpuri, who had just defeated Galaman in the previous round, defeated him.
In Saturday's final event, the Paladins had four of their five entrants in women's foil advance beyond pool play. Leading the charge for RMC was
Stephanie Leach, whose 5-1 pool play record, followed by back-to-back wins in the bracket stage earned her 15
th overall.
Emma Libreiro (3-3),
Chelsey Guo (2-4) and
Iris Li all joined Leach in the knockout stage, but would all lose their round of 64 matches.
The final men's competition of the event kick-started Sunday's schedule, with five RMC Paladins competing in men's foil. Earning RMC their best results, and reaching the same stage of the event were
Keegan Pike, who finished 3-3 in round robin, before picking up a win in the round of 64 and Aleksandre Lapshin was also able to qualify for the bracket stage after going 2-3 in round robin. Like his teammate, Lapshin would pick up a win in the round of 64 before falling in the round of 32.
With just two Paladins competing in women's sabre, it was RMC's lightest event. Despite just the two entrants, both
Rina Lee (1-5) and
Isla Adams (1-4) were able to qualify. Although Adams would fall in her first knockout match, Lee would go on to win in the round of 64, before dropping her round of 32 contest.
Rounding out the event Sunday evening was women's épée. All six of RMC's entrants advanced to the bracket stage. Finish round robin with the best record amongst Paladins was
Trinity Armstrong. Armstrong won five of her six matches.
Sydney Hong picked up three wins in pool play, while Claire French won two.
Tegan Penner,
Laura Grier and Madi Booth each picked up one win. Although French, Penner, Grier and Booth were defeated in the round of 64, both Armstrong and Hong won back-to-back matches to advance to the round of 16. That is as far as the pair would get though.
The fencing team will now head into the holiday break before resuming their schedule on January 11 when they head to Ottawa for the Carleton Invitational.

La première épreuve de la compétition samedi matin était celle de l'épée chez les hommes. Avec sept escrimeurs inscrits, c'est l'étudiant-athlète de troisième année
Daniil Makarenko qui a obtenu le meilleur résultat du CMR avec une 10e place. Makarenko a complété la phase préliminaire avec une fiche de 5-0 pour ensuite remporter ses duels de 32e de finale et de 16e de finale, avant de s'incliner 15-14 contre Hugo Allard de Western.

Stephanie Leach qui a amassé une fiche de 5-1 en phase de groupes, elle a remporté deux victoires de suite en tours éliminatoires pour conclure la compétition au 15e rang.

La dernière épreuve masculine au menu, celle du fleuret, a donné le ton à la compétition dimanche, avec cinq représentants des Paladins du CMR. Le meilleur résultat a été réalisé par une paire d'athlètes qui ont atteint les 16e de finale, soit
Keegan Pike, qui a amassé une fiche de 3-3 en phase de groupes avant de remporter son duel de 32e de finale. Pour sa part, Aleksandre Lapshin a affiché un bilan de 2-3 en phase de groupes avant de gagner en 32e de finale pour ensuite s'éteindre au tour suivant.
Le sabre féminin était le moins fréquenté pour les Paladins du CMR avec deux athlètes.
Rina Lee (1-5) et
Isla Adams (1-4) sont passées aux tours éliminatoires. Adams a perdu son premier match, tandis que Lee a gagné son duel de 32e de finale avant de s'incliner en 16e de finale.
Dans la dernière épreuve en lice dimanche, le CMR comptait six participantes à l'épée féminine, qui ont chacune accédé aux tours éliminatoires.
Trinity Armstrong a obtenu la meilleure fiche en phase préliminaire, remportant cinq de ses six matchs.
Sydney Hong a signé trois victoires en phase préliminaire, tandis que Claire French en a remporté deux.
Tegan Penner,
Laura Grier et Madi Booth ont remporté une victoire chacune. Bien que French, Penner, Grier et Booth ont été battues en 32e de finale, Armstrong et Hong ont remporté leurs deux premiers matchs pour accéder aux huitièmes de finale, mais c'est là que c'est arrêté leur parcours.
L'équipe d'escrime sera en pause pour la période des Fêtes et reprendra l'action le 11 janvier à Ottawa à l'occasion de la rencontre Invitation de l'Université Carleton.
