Calverley's Study Tips
For incoming student-athletes, or anyone looking to stay on top of their assignments, Calverley recommends a simple tip that can go a long way.
Have a calendar with all your assignments and the dates you want them completed by, as well as their actual due dates.
Achieving such a high academic standard is an impressive feat for any U SPORTS student-athlete, and perhaps even more so for those at RMC, whose college life also includes additional military duties.
Currently in her third year of a degree in political science, this is Calverley's first time being recognized among the top academic student-athletes at the College.
"It means a lot to be celebrated as an Academic All-Star, because I started out my first year with a pretty low academic average and very poor study habits," she said. "I have worked a lot on learning how not to procrastinate; being recognized as an Academic All-Star definitely motivates me to keep focusing on my studies."
Once she completes her degree, Calverley will graduate as an Intelligence Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
In 2019-20, the outside hitter enjoyed a class on research and methods, which introduced political science students to statistical methods and research design, taught by assistant professor Dr. Holly Ann Garnett.
"I found it very interesting to see how political scientists conduct case studies," Calverley said. "I loved learning how to manipulate large data sets and finding correlations between variables. It was also intriguing to see the real world applications of political science."
While she enjoyed Dr. Garnett's class last year, Calverley named a military faculty member as her favourite instructor throughout her time at the College. When asked to describe Capt Donald McFarling in just three words, she said:
"Captain McFarling is… Educated. Experienced. Fair."
