RMC and Queen's played the first game of the OUA regular season on Wednesday night at the Memorial Centre, doing battle for the first of eight times this year.
The Gaels won this cross-Kingston matchup 5-2.
The Paladins were held off the scoresheet in the opening 20 minutes of the game, while Queen's managed to notch their first of the season only a few minutes before the intermission. Just before the horn sounded,
Brad Van Schubert made one of many highlight-reel saves for RMC, sliding cross-crease to stop a Gaels chance in close.
Defenceman
Cole Noble scored the Paladins first goal of the 2021-22 season five minutes into the second period. As RMC killed a 4-on-3 penalty, Noble hopped out of the box and into the play, beating the Gaels Luke Richardson to tie the game 1-1.
Brandon Machado and
Christopher Paquette earned the assists.
After Queen's pulled ahead going into the second intermission, the Paladins came out buzzing to start the third period. Assistant captain
Noah Rowe put a shot on goal, which was saved, but Richardson's rebound found its way into the slot, where
Mitch Larabie put his weight behind a slapshot to find the back of the net. Rowe and
Joel Holtrop picked up assists on the play, which brought the Paladins within one.
Van Schubert made his first period save look like child's play in the final frame, reaching all the way back to stop a breakaway chance in a sure contender for the OUA Plays of the Week.
Despite allowing two more goals in the third period, the Paladins netminder finished the game with 39 saves, as the busier of the two goalies.
Queen's added an empty-net goal to wind up with a 5-2 win.
RMC and Queen's will meet again on Saturday in the Paladins home opener at 2:00 PM in Constantine Arena.

Van Schubert a ensuite fait passer son magnifique arrêt de fin de première période pour un jeu d'enfant, s'étirant de tout son long pour frustrer un joueur de Queen's en échappée dans ce qui sera certainement un candidat aux jeux de la semaine de SUO.
Malgré les deux autres buts accordés en troisième période, le gardien des Paladins a amassé 39 arrêts, faisant de lui le plus occupé des deux cerbères.
Queen's a ajouté un but dans un filet désert pour une marque finale de 5-2.
Les deux équipes ont de nouveau rendez-vous samedi à 14h à l'Aréna Constantine, domicile des Paladins.
