The RMC Paladins made history in 2021-22 by earning the most regular season wins since joining the OUA in 2004-05, as well as qualifying for the OUA playoffs for the first time in program history.
In the first round of the playoffs on Wednesday night, the Paladins travelled to Toronto to play the Rams, who would go on to win the match 3-0 (30-28, 25-16, 25-17).
RMC and the Rams had just done battle on Saturday to determine the home court advantage for the playoff game, with the Paladins looking for revenge for Sunday's loss.
The first set got off to great start for the visiting team from RMC with
Adam Reid getting involved in the Paladins offence early on.
Setter
Jonathan Barton was distributing the ball well, finding
Joshua Wilkinson,
Michael Rowsell and
Jason Nadeau throughout the opening set. RMC maintained their lead at 19-15, before the Rams came back to tie the score 23-23. Reid had two more kills after that point, but the Rams were able to close out the set 30-28.
The hosts rattled off six straight points to start the second set, before Reid pulled off a Michael Jordan-esque hand-switching tip, and followed it up with an ace from the service line.
The Paladins were never able to recover from the early deficit, however, dropping the second set 25-16.
To start the third, Wilkinson got another kill before Rowsell crushed a serve that resulted in an overpass and an easy point for RMC.
The Rams tied it up 7-7 before going on a serving streak, and stretching their lead to five points by the technical timeout, despite the Paladins best efforts.
RMC was unable to make up any ground, as the Rams player of the game, Jacob Walker, closed out the set from the service line.
The Paladins will say goodbye to four seniors on the team this offseason, namely Barton,
Simon Smith,
Harrison Kennedy, and
Derek Haines, which leaves a strong core of players set to return for 2022-23. RMC looks forward to what new recruits will bring to the program as they continue an upward trajectory in the OUA.

Jason Nadeau tout au long de la manche initiale. Le CMR a pris les devants 19-15 avant que les Rams reviennent pour créer l'égalité 23-23. Reid a réalisé deux autres attaques marquantes après ce point, mais les Rams ont trouvé le moyen de l'emporter 30-28.
Les hôtes ont inscrit six points consécutifs pour lancer la deuxième manche avant que Reid réalise un jeu digne de Michael Jordan pour battre le contre adverse avant de faire suivre d'un as au service.
Les Paladins n'ont jamais été en mesure de rattraper le retard du début de manche s'inclinant 25-16.
Pour démarrer la troisième manche, Wilkinson a inscrit une autre attaque marquante avant que Rowsell marque sur un service qui a provoqué une passe trop appuyée pour un point facile du CMR.
Les Rams ont créé l'égalité 7-7 avant d'y aller d'une séquence au service pour se donner une avance de cinq points avant le temps d'arrêt technique, malgré les meilleurs efforts des Paladins.
Le CMR n'a pas été ne mesure de combler le retard alors que le joueur du match des Rams, Jacob Walker a fermé les livres depuis la ligne de service.
Les Paladins diront au revoir à quatre finissants au cours de la saison morte, notamment Barton,
Simon Smith,
Harrison Kennedy et
Derek Haines, ce qui laisse un solide noyau de joueur de retour en 2022-2023. Le CMR compte aussi ajouter des recrues de qualité afin de poursuivre leur ascension dans les rangs de SUO.
