The Paladins played their final home game of the season on Saturday (Feb. 11). On Senior Day, the Excalibur came back and took down the Paladins 3-2 (26-24, 25-23, 13-25, 22-25, 12-15).
Before the game, seniors Taryn Bender and Emile L'Abbe were honoured in a pre-game ceremony for their contributions to the women's volleyball program.
In the first set, the teams traded points until the Excalibur took a 12-9 advantage, leading to an RMC timeout. As Taryn Bender earned her first kill, the Paladins scored four straight points to go up 13-12. L'Abbé hit a kill to make it 17-15, forcing Trent's first timeout. Jenna Trudeau came in again as a serving specialist and paid immediate dividends, serving four in a row. The Excalibur scored four of their own after the timeout, tying things up at 22. Telessa Salmikivi gave the Paladins the lead with a quick from the middle at 23-22. The set went into extra points and Salmikivi's block sealed the Paladins set one victory 26-24.
RMC got their offence going in the middle as Sophie Hotte got involved early, tying things up at four. Bender delivered two straight aces to give the Paladins a 10-6 lead and Trent called a timeout. Ashley Raymond earned an ace of her own to give the Paladins a five point lead at 16-11. A ball handling error by Trent's setter gave the Paladins a 20-14 advantage and a Trent second timeout. With the RMC lead at 24-17, the Excalibur scored multiple points in a row to put some pressure on the Paladins. Coach Christian called a timeout at 24-20. Trent made it close, pushing the Paladins at 24-22. A second timeout was called by the Paladins as the Excalibur did not go away fighting. RMC took the set 25-23, with the Paladins earning sixteen kills in the frame.
Trent took a five point lead to get things going in the third, forcing an RMC timeout. The Paladins kept fighting, but the Excalibur held to their advantage, even ballooning it to eight at 15-7. Trent rode their momentum for the 25-13 third set victory.
An overpass from Trent gave Salmikivi her eighth kill and a 4-1 lead for the Paladins. A Trent block by Jamie Spencer tied things up at eight. Strong serving from Elizabeth Turner helped the Excalibur take an 11-8 lead, forcing an RMC timeout. The Paladins kept fighting, reducing the Trent lead to two and forcing a Trent timeout of their own. A hitting error from the Peterborough side allowed the Paladins to tie things up. After a long rally that Trent won, the Paladins called their final timeout down 19-16. With back-to-back RMC kills, the Excalibur used their final timeout up 24-21. A block from L'Abbé and Raymond kill reduced the Trent lead to one at 24-23. It was not enough as the Excalibur used a setter dump to win it 25-23.
In the fifth and deciding set, Salmikivi had two kills early to help the Paladins cause. A
Jayda Phillipson block got the crowd cheering loud as they took a 6-5 lead. Trent got to the court switch with the lead at 8-7. Trudeau came off the bench again to deliver an ace and the Paladins lead at 9-8. After back-to-back Trent points the Excalibur took a 10-9 advantage. L'Abbe used a smart tip to keep tings alive for the Paladins, reducing the Trent lead to 11-10. Raymond's cross court kill tied things up at 12 and Trent used a timeout. The timeout led to an RMC serving error, causing RMC to try the timeout magic of their own to the Excalibur. IIt didn't paid dividends on this afternoon as Trent scored two straight to win the fifth set 15-12.
Bender had one of her strongest matches as a Paladin, delivering from the front row with hitting and blocking and providing multiple aces from the backcourt as well. The senior right side hitter finished with a team-high 13 kills in her final match as a Paladin. L'Abbe in her final match as well delivered 28 assists and added nine kills and 17 digs. Libero Lilie Demelo had a career-high 20 digs.
RMC heads on the road to finish their season against the Guelph Gryphons on Friday, February 17. First serve is at 6 p.m.
Les Paladins ont perdu leur dernier match à domicile de la saison samedi à l'occasion de la Journée des finissants. Après avoir perdu les deux premières manches, l'Excalibur a renversé la vapeur pour l'emporter en cinq manches (26-24, 25-23, 13-25, 22-25 et 12-15).
Avant la rencontre, les finissantes Taryn Bender et Emile L'Abbe ont été honorées pour leurs contributions au programme féminin de volleyball dans le cadre d'une cérémonie.
En première manche, les équipes se sont échangé les points jusqu'à ce que l'Excalibur prenne les devants 12 à 9, conduisant au premier temps d'arrêt du CMR. Alors que Taryn Bender a réussi sa première attaque marquante, les Paladins ont marqué quatre points de suite pour prendre les devants 13-12. L'Abbe a réussi une attaque marquante pour faire 17-15 et pousser Trent à prendre un premier temps d'arrêt. Jenna Trudeau a une fois de plus été la spécialiste au service et a rapporté en produisant quatre points de suite. L'Excalibur a marqué quatre points après le temps d'arrêt pour créer l'égalité 22-22. Telessa Salmikivi a donné les devants aux Paladins avec une attaque furtive au centre, portant la marque à 23-22. La manche est passée aux points supplémentaires et un contre de Salmikivi a fermé les livres, permettant aux Paladins de remporter la première manche 26-24.
L'attaque du CMR faisait flèche de tout bois au centre alors que Sophie Hotte s'est engagée tôt dans la deuxième manche pour créer l'égalité 4-4. Bender a produit deux as au service de suite pour donner les devants 10-6 aux Paladins, poussant Trent à prendre un temps d'arrêt. Ashley Raymond a aussi réussi un as au service pour donner les devants 16-11 aux Paladins. Une erreur de la passeuse de Trent a donné les devants 20-14 aux Paladins, entraînant le deuxième temps d'arrêt de Trent. Le CMR menait 24-17 quand l'Excalibur a inscrit quelques points consécutifs pour mettre de la pression sur ses hôtes. L'entraîneur Christian a pris un temps d'arrêt avec une avance de 24-22. Un deuxième temps d'arrêt a été pris par les Paladins puisque l'Excalibur refusait de plier l'échine. Le CMR a finalement remporté la manche 25-23 grâce à ses 16 attaques marquantes.
Trent s'est donné une avance de cinq points pour démarrer la troisième manche, poussant le CMR à prendre un temps d'arrêt. Les Paladins ont bien lutté, mais l'Excalibur a gardé le cap, augmentant l'écart à huit points (15-7). Trent a ainsi tenu bon en route vers une victoire de 25-13 en troisième manche.
Une passe mal dirigée par Trent a conduit à la huitième attaque marquante de Salmikivi pour une avance de 4-1 des Paladins en quatrième manche. Un contre de Jamie Spencer a permis à Trent de créer l'égalité 8-8. Un solide service d'Elizabeth Turner a procuré une avance de 11-8 aux visiteuses, poussant le CMR à prendre un temps d'arrêt. Les Paladins n'ont jamais abandonné, réduisant l'avance de Trent à deux points et conduisant les visiteuses à prendre un temps d'arrêt. Une erreur offensive de la formation de Peterborough a permis aux Paladins de créer l'égalité. Après un long échange remporté par Trent, les Paladins ont pris leur dernier temps d'arrêt, en retard 19-16 à la marque. Avec deux attaques marquantes du CMR, l'Excalibur a utilisé son dernier temps d'arrêt à 24-21. Un contre de L'Abbe et une attaque marquante de Raymond ont réduit l'avance de Trent à 24-23, mais cette remontée s'est arrêtée là alors que la passeuse de l'Excalibur a mis un terme à la manche en surprenant la défensive des Paladins pour l'emporter 25-23.
En cinquième manche, Salmikivi a réussi deux attaques marquantes pour aider la cause des Paladins, Un contre de Jayda Phillipson a soulevé la foule et donné les devants 6-5 aux locales. Trent a atteint le changement de côté avec une avance de 8-7. Trudeau s'est à nouveau amenée dans le match en réalisant un as au service pour donner les devants 9-8 aux Paladins. Deux points consécutifs de Trent ont fait basculer le pointage à 10-9 en faveur de l'Excalibur puis L'Abbe a fait preuve de brio sur un amorti qui a réduit l'avance de Trent à 11-10. L'attaque marquante en croisé de Raymond a créé l'égalité 12-12, poussant Trent à prendre un temps d'arrêt. Au retour de la pause, le CMR a commis une erreur au service, poussant les locales à prendre leur temps d'arrêt. La stratégie n'a toutefois pas rapport puisque Trent a inscrit deux points consécutifs pour remporter la manche 15-12 et la rencontre.
Bender a disputé un de ses meilleurs matchs dans l'uniforme des Paladins, avec ses attaques et ses contres sur la ligue avant, sans compter ses nombreux as au service. L'attaquante finissante a conclu la rencontre avec 13 attaques marquantes à son dernier match à la maison en carrière. L'Abbe a pour sa part profité de sa dernière rencontre à domicile en carrière pour amasser 28 passes, neuf attaques marquantes et 17 récupérations. La libéro Lilie Demelo a réalisé un sommet personnel avec 20 récupérations.
Le CMR ira conclure sa saison sur le terrain des Gryphons de Guelph avec un premier match le vendredi 17 février à compter de 18 h.
