Returning to the SAM Gym court Saturday afternoon to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves for the second time in as many days, the Paladins looked to earn their first win of the early season. Despite a strong effort for all three sets, the Paladins were unable to get the better of Lakehead, losing 3-0 (22-25, 22-25, 20-25).
As the contest got underway, Lakehead was able to take control early on, jumping out to a 12-6 lead. The early deficit did not faze the Paladins though, as they battled back into the set. Narrowing the gap to 16-14, RMC forced a timeout from Lakehead to try and slow the Paladins momentum. From there, neither side was able to separate much and the Thunderwolves would ultimately hold on, 25-22.
In a similar fashion to the first set, the second began with Lakehead again establishing control early on. The Thunderwolves were able to jump out to an 11-5 lead. Like the previous set though, RMC started to battle back. Trimming the lead to 16-13, the Paladins continued to fight and pulled within one point late at 23-22. However, they were unable to get over the hump and dropped a second consecutive tight set 25-22.
Looking to flip the script in the third, although it was tight early one again, it was RMC jumping out in front 11-10. The Thunderwolves were able to quickly regain control though, going on a seven to two run, building up an 18-12 lead. From there, Lakehead continued to roll and win the set 25-20.
For the second straight match,
Elisa Markentin led the team in kills with 12, followed closely behind by
Ashley Raymond with 11.
Jayda Phillipson led the way with 22 assists, while
Lilie Demelo had a team-high seven digs.
Looking to bounce back, the Paladins will turn their attention to the Ottawa Gee-Gees, who they will host on November 1
st and 2
nd.
De retour sur les planches du SAM Gym samedi après-midi pour accueillir les Thunderwolves de Lakehead pour la deuxième fois en deux jours, les Paladins cherchaient à signer une première victoire en ce début de saison. Malgré un bel effort, les joueuses du CMR n'ont pas été en mesure d'enlever une manche à leurs adversaires, s'inclinant 3-0 (22-25, 22-25 et 20-25).
Alors que la rencontre s'est mise en branle, Lakehead s'est échappé pour prendre les devants 12-6. Ce déficit n'a pas paralysé les hôtes pour autant, remontant la pente pour réduire l'écart à deux points (14-16). Le CMR a alors forcé un temps d'arrêt de Lakehead qui cherchait à ralentir le rythme des Paladins. L'écart s'est ainsi maintenu jusqu'à la fin de manche, remportée 25-22 par les Thunderwolves.
Un peu comme en première manche, Lakehead a pris contrôle de la deuxième manche, se donnant les devants 11-5. Comme dans la manche initiale, le CMR a de nouveau remonté la pente, réduisant l'écart à trois points (13-16). Les locales ont réduit l'écart davantage à un seul point (23-22), mais n'ont pas été en mesure de renverser l'allure de la manche, s'inclinant 25-22.
Cherchant à éviter le jeu blanc, le CMR a cette fois pris les devants 11-10 à mi-chemin en troisième manche. Les Thunderwolves ont toutefois vite fait de reprendre le contrôle de cet engagement, inscrivant sept des neuf points suivants pour se donner une priorité de 18-12. De là, Lakehead a filé vers une victoire de 25-20.
Pour un deuxième match de suite,
Elisa Markentin a été la meilleure des siennes avec 12 attaques marquantes, suivie de près par
Ashley Raymond (11).
Jayda Phillipson a dominé les Paladins avec 22 passes tandis que
Lilie Demelo a amassé sept récupérations, un sommet dans ce match pour le CMR.
Les Paladins chercheront maintenant à rebondir et tournent leur attention vers les Gee-Gees d'Ottawa, qu'elles accueilleront les 1er et 2 novembre.
