Beginning a stretch of nine consecutive road matches, the RMC Paladins travelled to Guelph Friday afternoon to take on the Gryphons. Able to take a set off the Gryphons, the Paladins were unable to take the match, dropping a 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 20-25, 15-25) decision.
In the first set, the Paladins, as they have often lately, found themselves in a tight, back-and-forth set. On nine different occasions, the two teams were tied during the opening set, as both sides try to take control. Although RMC led for most of the middle portion, Guelph was able to draw even at 17-17. The Gryphons then began to build up a lead of their own. Winning seven of the next 11 points, the Gryphons reached set-point up 24-21. The Paladins did not go quietly, winning two consecutive points, pulling with one. Guelph would finish off the set on the ensuing point though to take a 1-0 lead.
Much like the first, the second set was also tightly-contested. Throughout the entire set, neither team was able to build a lead bigger than two points. Even tighter than that, with the score tied 18-18, RMC nor Guelph were able to establish a lead larger than one, up until the very end. Trailing 24-23, the Paladins were able to fend off a Guelph set-point. RMC then was able to use that momentum to power themselves to a second set win, taking three straight points to win the set 26-24.
Although the score remained close to start the third, the Paladins were able to create a bit of early separation, gradually building a 12-7 lead and forcing the Gryphons to call for time. The timeout, however, did wonders for the homeside who went on to seven of the next eight points, while simultaneously taking a 14-13 lead. Although RMC was able to keep Guelph close, they were unable to regain the lead from that point on, with the Gryphons ultimately taking the set 25-20.
Like the three previous sets, the fourth started out quite close. However, with the score tied 5-5, Guelph began to make their move. Going on a four-point run and a five-point run, the Gryphons were able to establish some breathing room with a 16-9 lead. Continuing to roll, Guelph would take the final set 25-15.
On the stat sheet, first-year left side,
Tommy Roussel recorded a match-high 19 kills.
Andrew Gallant tied for a match-high in assists with 34, while
Maciej Tereszko finished with a team-high six digs.
The Paladins would look to bounce back on November 23 when they get a second chance at the Gryphons, as the two teams will once again square off in Guelph at 1800hrs.

En première manche, les Paladins, comme ils l'ont souvent fait ces derniers temps, ont disputé une manche serrée où l'initiative a constamment changé de côté. À neuf reprises, il y a eu égalité au pointage en la première manche, alors que les deux équipes ont tenté à tour de rôle de prendre le contrôle. Bien que le CMR ait eu l'avance pendant la majeure partie du milieu de la manche, Guelph a réussi à venir de l'arrière pour provoquer une égalité de 17-17. Les Gryphons ont ensuite commencé à se bâtir une avance à leur tour. En remportant sept des 11 points suivants, les Gryphons se sont rendus jusqu'au point de manche en vertu d'une priorité de 24-21. Toutefois, les Paladins n'ont pas plié l'échine, remportant deux points d'affilée pour réduire leur retard à un seul point. Guelph allait ensuite remporter la manche sur le point suivant pour une avance de 1-0.
À l'instar de la manche initiale, la deuxième manche a aussi donné lieu à une chaude lutte. Tout au long de la manche, aucune équipe n'a été en mesure de prendre une avance de plus de deux points. Qui plus est, après qu'il y eut une égalité de 18-18, ni le CMR, ni Guelph n'a réussi à prendre une avance de plus d'un point et ce, jusqu'à la fin. Tirant de l'arrière 24-23, les Paladins ont résisté à un point de manche de Guelph. Le CMR a profité de cet élan pour filer vers la victoire en deuxième manche, remportant pour trois points consécutifs pour ainsi s'imposer 26-24.
Bien que le pointage soit resté serré en début de troisième manche, les Paladins ont été en mesure de creuser l'écart quelque peu, se forgeant graduellement une priorité de 12-7 pour forcer les Gryphons à demander un temps d'arrêt. La pause s'est avérée le tonique recherché pour l'équipe locale, qui a remporté sept des huit points suivants pour ainsi prendre les devants 14-13. Bien que le CMR ait réussi à garder le pointage serré, il n'a jamais pu reprendre les devants, si bien que les Gryphons ont fini par s'imposer 25-20.
À l'instar des trois premières manches, le jeu a été serré à la quatrième reprise. Toutefois, après qu'une égalité de 5-5 eut été créée, Guelph a commencé à se détacher. Y allant d'une séquence de quatre points de suite et d'une autre de cinq points, les Gryphons ont pu se donner une bonne marge de manœuvre en vertu d'une avance de 16-9. Guelph a continué à ce rythme jusqu'à la fin pour ainsi remporter la dernière manche 25-15.
Au chapitre des statistiques, l'étudiant de première année qui évolue du côté gauche,
Tommy Roussel, a réalisé 19 attaques marquantes, le total le plus élevé du match.
Andrew Gallant a fini à égalité au premier rang pour les passes avec 34, tandis que
Maciej Tereszko y est allé de six récupérations, un sommet du côté du CMR.
Les Paladins chercheront à rebondir le 23 novembre quand ils affronteront encore une fois les Gryphons à Guelph, à compter de 18 h.
