Fresh off their first victory off the season, the RMC Paladins returned to the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse in Thunder Bay, Ont., Saturday night to play their final game of the 2023-24 season. Looking to pick up a second straight win to close out the campaign, the Paladins came up short in four sets, falling 3-1 (15-25, 17-25, 25-22, 10-25).
As the match got underway, the Paladins had a tough time getting started, falling behind 6-1. However, RMC would get going after a timeout, winning four straight points and cutting the deficit to just one. In what was a game of runs to start though, it was Lakehead's turn to retake momentum. Winning six straight points, the Thunderwolves were able to open a 12-5 lead and retake control of the set. Although the Paladins pushed to make a few runs of their own for the remainder of the set, they were unable to chisel away at the Lakehead lead, and would ultimately lose the set 25-15.
For RMC, the second set got off to a similar start, unfortunately. Unable to stop the Lakehead attack, the Paladins found themselves trailing 9-0 to begin the second set, before they were able to get on the board. Pulling within six points, at 12-6, RMC did their best to fight back, but the Thunderwolves proved too much. Lakehead would build a 23-12 lead as they closed in on a two-set lead. However, despite the uphill battle, RMC did their best not to go quietly, and would win five points in a row before losing the last two.
Like they had the previous night, the Paladins were trailing two sets to none once again. Able to complete the comeback just a day ago, RMC looked to take that same path again on Saturday. Going back and forth with Lakehead to start the fourth set, RMC began to get some momentum on their side. Tied 7-7, the Paladins were able to start building a lead. Going up 11-8, RMC was able to maintain their three point lead through much of the set. However, after a Lakehead pushed shrunk the Paladins lead to 20-19, RMC would call timeout to help get back on track. Doing just that, the Paladins won three straight points, before finishing off the set 25-22.
Having won four consecutive must-win sets, the Paladins set out for a fifth. However, trying to come back from two sets down back to back nights proved too much for RMC, as they were unable to get much going in the fourth. Lakehead would quickly jump out to a 5-1 lead, forcing a RMC timeout, before extending the lead to 12-1. Continuing to roll, the Thunderwolves would force RMC into their second timeout of the set at 18-4. Although the Paladins continued to find until the end, there was not enough left in the tank for RMC, falling 25-10.

Elisa Markentin led the Paladins in kills, finishing one ahead of teammates
Sara Grosse and
Emma Titley, who each finished with seven. Cassidy Chung went on to record a team-high 29 assists, while
Emilie Boileau led the team in digs with 15.
With the Paladins completing their final game of the season, their young squad finished the 2023-24 campaign with a record of 1-19, while also providing many reasons for optimism heading into 2024-25.

Alors que le match s'est mis en branle, les Paladins ont connu des ratées, tirant de l'arrière 6-1. Toutefois, le CMR a réagi après un temps d'arrêt, remportant quatre échanges de suite et réduisant l'écart à seul point. Dans ce qui a été un match de séquences, Lakehead a repris le dessus et a remporté les six échanges suivants pour se donner les devants 12 à 5, reprenant les commandes de la manche initiale. Bien que les Paladins aient poussé la machine pour aligner quelques points consécutifs avant la fin de la manche, elles n'ont pas été en mesure de réduire l'avance de Lakehead et ont perdu 25-15.
Le CMR a malheureusement démarré sa deuxième manche comme en première. Incapable de ralentir l'attaque de Lakehead, les visiteuses ont accusé un retard de 9-0 avant de finalement s'inscrire à la marque. Réduisant l'écart à six points et tirant de l'arrière 12-6, les joueuses du CMR se sont battues pour revenir dans le match, mais leurs adversaires des Thunderwolves étaient résolues à leur barrer la route. Alors que Lakehead menait 23-12, les Paladins ont marqué les cinq points suivants, avant de céder les deux derniers pour s'incliner 25-17.
Comme c'était le cas la veille, les Paladins tiraient à nouveau de l'arrière deux manches à zéro. Capable de compléter une remontée la veille, le CMR s'est remis au boulot au début de la troisième manche. Échangeant les points en début d'engagement, le CMR a commencé à imposer le ton. À égalité 7-7, les visiteuses ont commencé à creuser l'écart. En avant 11-8, elles ont maintenu une avance de trois points jusqu'à la fin de la manche. Cependant, les Thunderwolves ont réduit l'écart à un seul point (20-19), poussant le CMR à prendre un temps d'arrêt. Les Paladins ont marqué trois points consécutifs à la reprise, en route vers un gain de 25-22.
Après avoir remporté quatre manches « gagne ou crève » de suite, les Paladins ne sont toutefois pas parvenues à réaliser la grande remontée deux soirs consécutifs. Lakehead s'est donné une avance de 5-1, forçant un premier temps d'arrêt du CMR, avant de prolonger l'avance à 12-1. Poursuivant sur cette lancée, les Thunderwolves ont provoqué un deuxième temps d'arrêt du CMR alors que la marque était de 18-4. Même si les Paladins n'ont pas lâché prise jusqu'à la fin, il ne semblait plus y avoir de carburant dans le carburateur et Lakehead a gagné 25-10.

La jeune équipe des Paladins conclut ainsi sa saison 2023-2024 avec une fiche de 1-19, mais avec une bonne dose d'optimisme en vue de la saison 2024-2025.
