Returning home to the SAM Gym for the first of four consecutive home matches, the RMC Paladins were back in action Friday night hosting the Guelph Gryphons. In what was the first of two matches with Guelph this weekend, the Paladins were unable to get past Guelph, falling 3-0 (15-25, 14-25, 19-25).
In the beginning, the Paladins were able to exchange points with the Gryphons and hold an early 5-4 lead. However, following a five-point Guelph run that led to an RMC timeout, the Paladins had a difficult time trying to cut into the deficit. For the remainder of the set, Guelph would not allow the Paladins to narrow the gap to any less than four points, while slowly pulling further away. The Gryphons would ultimately win the set 25-15.
Looking to even the match in the second set, the Paladins were once again able to hold their own early in the set. Tied 9-9, RMC was doing their best to keep pace with the visitors. However, a quick five to one run from Guelph gave them a 14-10 lead and forced the Paladins into their first timeout of the set. From that point, RMC was unable to recover as the Gryphons continued to widen the gap before taking the set 25-14.
Trailing by two sets entering the third, the Paladins found themselves in some trouble early on. Having started both the first and seconds sets strong, RMC suddenly was down 8-4 to begin the third. However, despite the deficit, the Paladins continued to fight, and ultimately made a strong push. Taking eight of the next 12 points, RMC got back on even ground tying the set 12-12. Following a Guelph run that regained their four-point lead, the Paladins then pushed back again, this time pulling within one point of the Gryphons at 17-16. Coming out of a timeout, Guelph once again found its groove. Going up 21-17, the Gryphons forced RMC into calling time. Unfortunately, the late deficit proved too much for the Paladins to overcome, losing the set 25-19.
Fourth-year middle,
Eve Smith led the Paladins on offence with five kills while also recording two blocks.
Jayda Phillipson once again had the team-high in assists with 11. Defensively, libero,
Tricia-Jane Ramirez led the team in digs with 13.
Trying to bounce back, the Paladins will be back in action tomorrow (Nov. 15) when they host Guelph once again to round out their two-match weekend series. First serve is set for 1400hrs.

À l'occasion de ce qui était le premier de deux affrontements contre Guelph cette fin de semaine, les Paladins n'ont pas réussi à avoir le dessus, s'inclinant 3-0 (15-25, 14-25, 19-25).
En début de rencontre, les Paladins ont réussi à échanger point pour point avec les Gryphons et à s'emparer initialement d'une avance de 5-4. Sauf qu'à la suite d'une poussée de cinq points de Guelph qui a mené à un temps d'arrêt demandé par le CMR, les Paladins ont eu de la difficulté à réduire leur déficit. Jusqu'à la fin de la première manche, Guelph n'a pas laissé les Paladins s'approcher à moins de quatre points d'écart, tout en augmentant lentement son avance. Les Gryphons ont fini par remporter cette manche 25-15.
Cherchant à créer l'égalité dans le match à l'occasion de la deuxième manche, les Paladins ont encore une fois tenu leur bout au début. À égalité 9-9, les joueuses du CMR faisaient de leur mieux pour garder le rythme avec les visiteuses. Toutefois, en marquant cinq des six points suivants, Guelph a pris les devants 14-10 et a forcé les Paladins à demander leur premier temps d'arrêt de la manche. Le CMR n'a pu s'en remettre par la suite, alors que les Gryphons ont continué d'accroître leur avance avant de clore la manche sur le score de 25-14.
Tirant de l'arrière 2-0 au moment d'entreprendre la troisième manche, les joueuses des Paladins ont vite frappé un mur. Après avoir entrepris chacune des deux premières manches en force, cette fois le CMR s'est retrouvé en déficit de 8-4. Mais malgré cet écart, les Paladins ont continué de batailler et elles ont fini par y aller d'une bonne séquence. En récoltant huit points sur une possibilité de 12, le CMR est revenu à égalité, au compte de 12-12. À la suite d'une poussée de Guelph qui lui a permis de reprendre une priorité de quatre points, les Paladins ont répliqué une nouvelle fois, se rapprochant cette fois à un seul point des Gryphons pour un pointage de 17-16. Mais après un temps d'arrêt, Guelph a de nouveau trouvé son rythme. Se donnant une avance de 21-17, les Gryphons ont forcé le CMR à demander un temps d'arrêt. Malheureusement, ce déficit en fin de manche s'est avéré trop difficile à combler, si bien que les Paladins se sont inclinés 25-19 dans cette troisième manche.
La bloqueuse centrale de quatrième année Eve Smith a été la meneuse à l'attaque chez les Paladins avec cinq attaques marquantes, en plus de réaliser deux contres. Jayda Phillipson a encore une fois réussi le plus grand nombre de passes pour son équipe avec 11. Défensivement, la libéro Tricia-Jane Ramirez a été le meilleure du CMR au chapitre des récupérations avec 13.
Les Paladins chercheront à rebondir samedi (15 nov.) quand elles recevront Guelph à nouveau pour compléter leur série de deux matchs de la fin de semaine. L'affrontement commencera à 14 h 00.
