Returning home for the first time in 20 days, the RMC Paladins were back in the familiar confines of the SAM Gym Friday night. Despite being back home, the Paladins were unable to get past the visiting York Lions, dropping a close 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 17-25, 19-25) decision.
Looking to regroup following back-to-back road trips west to Guelph and Waterloo, RMC was in a battle with York from the opening serve. Going back and forth for much of the opening set, neither side was able to create a large lead. However, throughout the set, York consistently held the lead. Although the Lions were out in front, the Paladins made a strong push late, trimming the York lead to 22-21. Following a Lion's timeout though, York was able to secure the next point, before winning two of the next three, taking the first set 25-22.
Despite trailing by a set, RMC wasted no time getting going in the second. Coming out of the gate quickly, the Paladins went up 7-2, before extending the advantage to 15-7. Continuing their strong play all through the set, RMC would push the lead to seven points, and later nine at 22-13. The Paladins promptly close the set out just a few points later, winning 25-16.
Having just tied the match at one set apiece, the Paladins were looking to carry over that momentum into the third set. Unfortunately, York had other ideas. Despite their best efforts, RMC was unable to get much going on early in the set, as the Lions quickly took control. Going up 14-7, York forced the Paladins into a timeout to try to regroup. Although RMC was able to put together a couple of small runs, they were never fully able to make up the deficit, eventually dropping the set 25-17.
With their backs against the wall needing to win the fourth set to force a fifth, the Paladins went back and forth with York to open the set. Approaching the middle stages though, the Lions slowly began to separate. Establishing a five-point lead at 14-9, York was able to maintain that difference for much of the set. The Paladins would try to battle back but could only get as close as 21-18, before York finished the match off, 25-19.
On the attack, RMC had a pair of players reach double-figures in kills.
Tommy Roussel and
Carter Liu each reached the mark with 13 and 10, respectively.
Christian Patterson recorded a team-high 31 assists, while Liu's seven digs led the team defensively.
The Paladins will return to the SAM Gym tomorrow (Nov. 29), as they finish off their two-match weekend set with York.
De retour à domicile pour la première fois en 20 jours, les Paladins du CMR ont retrouvé le confort su SAM Gym vendredi soir. Malgré ce retour à la maison, les Paladins n'ont pas su avoir le meilleur face aux Lions de York, s'inclinant en quatre manches (22-25, 25-16, 17-25 et 19-25).
Cherchant à se retrouver après des déplacements consécutifs à Guelph et Waterloo, le CMR était dans la bataille avec York dès le premier service. Échangeant les points coup sur coup pour la majeure partie de la première manche, ni une ni l'autre des équipes n'a pu s'échapper. Cependant, York a réussi à maintenir l'avance. Même si les Lions menaient, les Paladins ont réalisé une belle poussée en fin de manche, réduisant à l'écart à 22-21. Après un temps d'arrêt, les visiteurs ont été en mesure de marquer le point suivant, puis deux des trois qui ont suivi pour l'emporter 25-22.
En retard d'une manche, le CMR n'a pas perdu de temps pour se mettre en marche en deuxième. Démarrant l'engagement en prenant les devants 7-2, les Paladins ont ajouté à leur avance pour mener 15-7. Poursuivant sur cette lancée, le CMR a accru l'avance à neuf points pour mener 22-13 avant de conclure la manche quelques échanges plus tard, sur une marque de 25-16.
À égalité une manche à une, les Paladins ont cherché à poursuivre sur cette lancée en troisième. Malgré leurs meilleurs efforts, les joueurs du CMR n'ont pas réussi à s'imposer et les Lions ont rapidement pris le contrôle. Menant 14-7, York a forcé les hôtes à prendre un temps d'arrêt. Bien que le CMR a aligné quelques points, les Paladins n'ont jamais su combler le retard, s'inclinant éventuellement 25-17.
Le dos au mur au début de la quatrième manche, les Paladins ont d'abord tenu tête aux Lions pour démarrer l'engagement. York s'est légèrement échappé à mi-chemin, se créant une avance de cinq points (14-9), un écart que les visiteurs ont su maintenir pour la majeure partie de la manche. Les Paladins ont tenté de remonter la pente, mais leur retard de 21-18 aura été le plus près qu'ils se sont approchés, s'inclinant 25-19.
À l'attaque, le CMR a vu deux joueurs passer le cap des 10 attaques marquantes, soit
Tommy Roussel (13) et
Carter Liu (10).
Christian Patterson a mené les siens avec 31 passes tandis que Liu a mené l'équipe en défensive avec sept récupérations.
Les Paladins seront de retour au SAM Gym demain (29 novembre) concluant leur weekend de deux matchs contre York.
