Coming off a trip to Thunder Bay last weekend, the RMC Paladins were back on the road on Friday, making the trip southwest to St. Catharines. Taking on the number six nationally ranked, Brock Badgers, the Paladins came out fighting, but were not able to keep with the Badgers in a 3-0 (23-25, 12-25, 24-26) defeat.
Unfazed by their opponent or travel, the Paladins went point for point with the Badger for much of the opening set. Recovering from an early 5-2 deficit, RMC quickly turned that three-point deficit in two a two-point advantage at 8-6. Although Brock responded with a few runs or their own, the Paladins would stay within striking distance through the middle portion of the set, and then they made their move. Trailing 16-13, the Paladins put together one of their best stretches of the season, going an 8-0 run to take a 21-16 lead. Again though, Brock would respond. Winning four straight points, the Badgers pulled within one at 21-20. RMC would hold a 23-22 lead shortly after, but three consecutive points for Brock would win the Badgers the set, 25-23.
As the second set got underway, RMC had a tough time matching what they had put together in the opener. The Badgers quickly gathered momentum and held it on their side for the duration of the set. Brock quickly raced out to a 13-3 lead before extending the advantage to 18-5. The Badgers would go on to finish off the set 25-12.
Determined not to go quietly, the Paladin regrouped and found their game once again in the third. Although they were never able to build a substantial lead, RMC went out in front at 3-2, and continued to carry the lead for most of the set. Battling throughout, the Paladins opened up a four-point lead at 16-12. RMC would continue to hold the lead late, up 19-17. However, at that point, the Badgers made their push. Winning three straight points, Brock took their first lead in the set since 2-1. Furthering their late surge, the Badger would take four of the next five point, earning a match point at 24-20. Despite their backs being against the wall, RMC's fight went on. The Paladins found a way to fend off four straight match points to tie the set 24-24. However, their effort came up just short, with Brock bouncing back to win the next to points and the match.
Ashley Raymond led the RMC attack with six kills.
Jayda Phillipson led the team in assists with 12, while
Trisha-Jane Ramirez had a team-high seven digs.
The Paladins will quickly return to action when they once again take on the Brock Badgers tomorrow (17 January).

Ne se laissant pas intimidé par leur adversaire, ni par le long voyage, les Paladins ont répliqué point pour point avec les Badgers pour la majeure partie de la première manche. Se relevant d'un retard de 5-2, le CMR a renversé un retard de trois points en avance de deux points (8-6). Bien que Brock ait répondu avec quelques points de leur côté, les Paladins ont maintenu l'écart serré à mi-chemin dans la manche avant de se mettre en marche. En retard 16-13, les Paladins ont connu une de leurs meilleures séquences de la saison, marquant huit points de suite pour prendre les devants 21-16. Brock a toutefois répliqué, s'approchant à un seul point de retard (21-20). Alors que le CMR menait 23-22, Brock a inscrit trois points de suite pour l'emporter 25-23.
En deuxième manche, le CMR n'a pas su rivaliser avec l'intensité de l'engagement initial. Les Badgers ont imposé le rythme et l'ont contrôlé pour la majeure partie de la manche, menant rapidement 13-3, puis 18-5, avant de l'emporter 25-12.
Déterminées à ne pas baisser les bras, les Paladins se sont regroupées et ont retrouvé de l'aplomb en troisième. Jamais en mesure de se donner un coussin confortable, les joueuses du CMR ont pris les devants 3-2 et ont gardé l'avance pour la majeure partie de la manche. EN avant 16-12, elles menaient encore 12 échanges plus tard par la marque de 19-17. Cependant, les Badgers ont accéléré la cadence à partir de ce moment. Remportant trois points de suite, Brock a pris les devants pour la première fois de la manche depuis leur avance de 2-1 en tout début d'échanges. Poursuivant sur cette lancée, les Badgers ont marqué les cinq points suivants pour mener 24-20. Bien qu'elles avaient le dos au mur, les Paladins ont résisté à quatre points de match pour créer l'égalité 24-24. Cependant, leurs efforts n'ont pas suffi alors que Brock a rebondi pour inscrire les deux points suivants et ainsi l'emporter.
Ashley Raymond a mené l'effort offensif des siennes avec six attaques marquantes.
Jayda Phillipson a été la meilleure des siennes avec 12 passes, tandis que
Trisha-Jane Ramirez a ajouté sept récupérations, un sommet dans le match pour les Paladins.
L'équipe sera rapidement de retour en action, alors qu'elles rendront à nouveau visite aux Badgers de Brock demain, le samedi 17 janvier.
