Coming off a pair of losses last weekend in St. Catharines, the RMC Paladins were looking to bounce back Friday evening in Kingston. Hosting the No. 9 Queen's Gaels, who made the trip across the Causeway, the Paladins fought but ultimately dropped a 3-0 (15-25, 21-25, 18-25) decision.
After going back and forth with the Gaels initially on Friday, Queen's began to pull away during the middle portion of the set. Jumping out to a 14-9 lead, Queen's forced RMC into their first timeout of the match. Unfortunately, RMC was unable to switch momentum to their side coming out of the timeout. Instead, the Gaels continued to slowly build up their lead before taking the set 25-15.
Similarly, in the second set, the Paladins once again found themselves trailing by a score of 14-9. This time, however, RMC was able to work their way back into the set. Chipping away at the Queen's lead, the Paladins would force the Gaels into a late timeout after trimming the Queen's advantage to just one point at 22-21. The Gaels would respond out of the stoppage though, finding a way to win the next three points and take the second set 25-21.
Trying to bounce back in the third, the Paladins did what they could to slow down their cross-town rivals. Just like the previous two sets though, the Gaels were able to open a three to four point advantage earlier, and then build on it through the set. RMC used a timeout trailing 14-10, and would later try a couple of substitutions, but the Gaels continued to keep the pressure on. Queen's would open their lead up to eight points at 22-14, before a brief RMC push. It was too much ground to make up for the Paladins though, who dropped the final set 25-18.
Tommy Roussel led the Paladins in kills with seven.
Christian Patterson had the team-high in assists with 16, while
Carter Liu finished with the team lead in digs with three.
RMC will look to turn the page quickly as they prepare to take on the Gaels once more on January 24, once again at the SAM Gym.
Après une paire de défaites le weekend dernier à St. Catharines, les Paladins du CMR ont cherché à rebondir à la maison vendredi soir. Accueillant la neuvième équipe au classement national, les Gaels de Queen's, les Paladins ont rivalisé avant de s'incliner en trois manches (15-25, 21-25 et 18-25) aux mains de leurs voisins de Kingston.
Après avoir tenu tête aux visiteurs en début de première manche, les Paladins ont vu les Gaels se distancer à mi-chemin. En avant 14-9, Queen's forcé les hôtes à prendre un premier temps d'arrêt. Malheureusement, cette pause n'a pas su briser le rythme de Queen's, qui a continué à bâtir sur leur rythme, lentement, mais sûrement vers un gain de 25-15.
Dans la même veine en deuxième manche, les Paladins se sont à nouveau retrouvés à tirer de l'arrière 14-9. Cette fois cependant, le CMR a été en mesure de revenir dans la manche. Réduisant l'écart de Queen's, les Paladins ont poussé les Gaels à prendre un temps d'arrêt alors qu'ils ne menaient que par un point (22-21). Les Gaels sont toutefois revenus en force après cette pause, marquant les trois points suivants pour l'emporter 25-21.
Cherchant à renverser la vapeur en troisième manche, les Paladins ont tout tenté pour ralentir Queen's. Cependant, comme ce fut le cas au cours des deux premiers engagements, les Gaels se sont procuré une avance de trois ou quatre points en début de manche, pour ensuite l'accroître en cours de route. Le CMR a pris un temps d'arrêt avec un retard de quatre points (14-10) et a ensuite effectué quelques remplacements, mais la pression des Gaels a été incessante. Queen's a ensuite accru son avance à huit points (22-14) avant une petite réaction du CMR, mais l'écart étant trop important, les Paladins se sont finalement inclinés 25-18.
Tommy Roussel a mené les Paladins avec sept attaques marquantes, tout comme
Christian Patterson avec 16 passes et
Carter Liu avec trois récupérations.
Le CMR tentera de rapidement tourner la page samedi (24 janvier) à l'occasion d'un autre duel avec les Gaels au SAM Gym de Kingston.
