The RMC Paladins and Queen's Gaels were in downtown Kingston Saturday night, as they made their way to Slush Puppie Place for the Carr-Harris Cup. In what was the 140^th edition of the annual game, the Paladins were able to put together an exciting late game comeback, but were ultimately defeated in overtime by the Gaels, 4-3.

Hockey's oldest rivalry got off to the exciting kind of start you would expect from the match up. With no shortage of excitement and energy in the building, the Gaels quickly jumped out in front. Jut over a minute and a half into the contest, Queen's opened the scoring on a Ante Zlomislic back-hand goal. The game would then tart to settle over the next handful of minutes with the two sides going back and forth. Then after just passing the midway point of the period, Paladins fourth-year forward, Isaac Pascoal pulled RMC even with a between the legs goal, that brought the crowd to its feet. The celebration for RMC was short-lived however, as the Gaels responded less than two minutes later. Looking to get back on equal terms, RMC would be the recipients of the first powerplay of the game, however, they were unable to convert as the game remained 2-1 after one.

The theme of the second period turned out to be special teams. With Queen's still leading by one, RMC went to the powerplay, a little over eight minutes into period. Instead of the Paladins finding a way to draw even, the Gaels struck short-handed, extending their advantage to 3-1. However, back on the man-advantage five minutes later, the Paladins would convert. Second-year forward, Fischer O'Brien fired a shot from the left-hand circle and got it past Queen's goalie Tanner Wickware to bring RMC back within one. Despite 29 total shots in the period, only the two goals would be scored.

Scrapping their way through the third period, the Paladins continuously searched for the equalizer. Create numerous chances, the third goal seemed to be just out of reach for much of the frame. However, that all changed late. With jut over three minutes to go in regulation, O'Brien, making a bid for his second goal of the night, fired a shot from the right circle. Although Wickware made the save, the puck remained loose behind him in the crease, which is when fourth-year defenceman, Bruce Coltart dove in and tapped home the game-tying goal. Suddenly a brand new game, the two teams both pressed over the final three minute but neither side was able to prevent overtime.

The contest marked the sixth time in RMC's last eight games that they have gone to OT. Unfortunately, for the Paladins, they were once again stuck with just a single point as the Gaels scored just 26 seconds into the extra session on a two-on-one.

Paladins first-year goalie, Ethan Morrow was named RMC's MVP for the game making 51 saves. Brayden Knox, Cole Foston, Noah Matulu, Pascoal and O'Brien each picked up an assist in the contest.

With two games remaining in their season, RMC will be back in Constantine Arena on February 13 when they host the UQTR Patriotes.

Les Paladins du CMR et les Gaels de Queen's avaient rendez-vous au centre-ville de Kingston samedi soir, sur la patinoire de la Place Slush Puppie dans le cadre de la Coupe Carr-Harris. Dans la 140^e édition de ce duel annuel, les Paladins ont réalisé une remontée palpitante en fin de rencontre, mais se sont ensuite avoués vaincus en prolongation par la marque de 4 à 3 aux mains des Gaels.

La plus ancienne rivalité du hockey a démarré de façon excitante comme on pourrait se l'attendre d'un tel match. Alors que l'intensité était à son comble sur la patinoire et dans les gradins, les Gaels ont rapidement pris les devants. Après seulement 90 secondes de jeu, Ante Zlomislic de Queen's a ouvert la marque sur un tir du revers. Le match a ensuite été marqué par du jeu enlevant d'un bout à l'autre de la patinoire pendant quelques minutes. Après avoir passé le point de mi-chemin dans la période, l'attaquant de quatrième année des Paladins Isaac Pascoal a créé l'égalité en longeant la rondelle entre les jambières du gardien adverse, soulevant la foule. Ces célébrations ont toutefois été de courtes durées pour le CMR alors que les Gaels ont repris les devants moins de deux minutes plus tard. Cherchant à égaliser le pointage à nouveau, le CMR a profité d'un premier jeu de puissance dans le match, mais sans toutefois parvenir à inscrire un deuxième but, rentrant au vestiaire pour le premier entracte en retard 2 à 1.

Le thème de la deuxième période a été celui des unités spéciales. Alors que Queen's menait par un but, le CMR a lancé son attaque à cinq sur la glace après un peu plus de huit minutes de jeu au deuxième tiers. Cependant, ce ne sont pas les Paladins qui ont créé l'égalité, mais les Gaels qui ont doublé leur avance en désavantage numérique. En retard 3 à 1, les Paladins ont eu droit à un autre avantage numérique cinq minutes plus tard et cette fois, ils ont réussi à trouver le fond du filet. L'attaquant de deuxième année Fischer O'Brien a effectué un tir du cercle de mise en jeu du côté gauche et a déjoué le gardien Tanner Wickware de Queen's pour réduire l'écart à un but. Malgré les 29 tirs dans la période, seulement deux buts ont été marqués.

Travaillant avec acharnement en troisième période, les Paladins ont frappé à la porte du but adverse fois et fois encore. Créant de nombreuses occasions, le troisième but semblait hors d'atteinte pour la majeure partie de l'engagement. Toutefois, la situation a changé en fin de temps réglementaire. Avec un peu plus de trois minutes à faire à la rencontre, O'Brien a effectué un tir du cercle de mise en jeu du côté droit, en quête de son deuxième but de la soirée. Bien que Wickware ait effectué le premier arrêt, la rondelle est demeurée libre derrière lui dans l'enclave. Le défenseur de quatrième année Bruce Coltart a plongé pour pousser le disque dans le but pour créer l'égalité. Soudainement, on s'est retrouvé avec un nouveau match alors que les deux équipes ont mis de la pression pour empêcher le match de se prolonger, mais en vain.

C'était la sixième fois à leurs huit derniers matchs que les Paladins ont eu recours à la prolongation. Malheureusement pour le CMR, l'équipe a été limitée à un seul point au classement alors que les Gaels ont tranché le débat après seulement 26 secondes de jeu, profitant d'une montée à deux contre un.

Le gardien recrue des Paladins Ethan Morrow a été nommé joueur du match pour le CMR après avoir réalisé 51 arrêts. Brayden Knox, Cole Foston, Noah Matulu, Pascoal et O'Brien ont chacun amassé des mentions d'aide dans la défaite.

Avec deux matchs à jouer à leur saison régulière, les joueurs du CMR seront de retour à l'Aréna Constatine le vendredi 13 février en accueillant les Patriotes de l'UQTR.
