Preparing to play just their fourth match of the 2023-24 OUA regular season, the RMC Paladins were looking to get themselves into a groove Saturday night in Toronto. Taking on the TMU Bold at the Mattamy Athletic Centre for the second time in as many nights, the Paladins would go on to win their first set of the season, but would fall in the match 3-1 (9-25, 28-26, 17-25, 13-25).
As the score indicated, there was not much the Paladins were able to get going their way in the opening set. Despite their efforts to get off to a fast start, RMC was unable to counteract the Bold attack during the first set. Not able to establish much in terms of momentum, the Paladins would see the Bold go on to a 25-9 first set win.
Despite how the opening set played out, RMC did not put their heads down. Collectively, they got right back to work and began to create some momentum of their own. The two teams would play a very tight second set throughout, with neither side able to create much in terms of separation. The Bold would go on a run at the end, but just when it looked like they were ready to take a two sets to none lead, the Paladins had other ideas. Fending off three consecutive set points, the Paladins not only extended the set, but then took full advantage of their own set point opportunity. Up 27-26, RMC went on to win the set with a stuff from second-year
Maciej Tereszko.
Hoping to keep the good times rolling, the Paladins came out on the attack in the third set as well. A pair of early kills from
Cameron Moar, and a pair of Tereszko, helped RMC establish an early 5-3 advantage. However, from that point on, the Bold were able to start putting runs together. TMU would jump out in front 10-8 and later 15-12, before winning five of the next six points to establish a 20-13 advantage. The home team would continue on from there to win the set 25-17.
Trying to stay alive in the fourth set, RMC went back and forth with the Bold but, unfortunately, were never able to establish a lead in the set. With TMU leading 5-4, the Bold would go on a 9-3 run to take control of the set at 14-7. Continuing to keep momentum on their set, TMU extended their lead to eight points at 18-10, forcing the Paladins into a timeout. Not looking back, the Bold would go on to take the set 25-13, and with it, the match.
Offensively, Moar had a big day for the Paladins. The middle led the team in points with 15.5 and kills with 13.
Andrew Gallant had a match-high 30 assists, and
Cedric Beaulieu led everyone on the court with 13 digs.
For the Paladins, they will return home to the SAM Gym on November 24
th when they play host to the Windsor Lancers. Game time is set for 1900.
À leur quatrième match de la saison régulière 2023-2024 des SUO, les Paladins du CMR cherchaient samedi soir à trouver leur rythme de croisière à Toronto. Contre le Bold de TMU au Centre sportif Mattamy pour une deuxième fois en autant de soirs, les Paladins ont remporté leur première manche de la saison, avant de s'incliner 3-1 (25-9, 26-28, 25-17 et 25-13).
Comme le pointage l'indique bien, les Paladins n'ont pas été en mesure de soutirer grand-chose de la première manche. Malgré leurs efforts pour démarrer en force, le CMR n'a pas su rivaliser avec l'attaque du Bold. Incapable de créer l'étincelle pour se donner un élan, les Paladins ont perdu la manche initiale 25-9.
Malgré la façon que la première manche s'est déroulée, les Paladins n'ont pas baissé les bras. Ensemble, ils se sont remis au boulot et ont trouvé leur rythme. Les deux équipes ont joué une manche très serrée, sans que l'écart se creuse de part et d'autre. Le Bold a connu une bonne séquence en fin de manche, mais juste avant de mettre la touche finale qui leur aurait permis de prendre les devants 2-0, les Paladins ont contrecarré leurs plans. Grâce à trois points consécutifs, les Paladins ont forcé la prolongation, puis en ont pleinement profité pour remporter leur première manche de la campagne. Maciej Tereszko a réussi un contre pour permettre aux visiteurs de l'emporter, et ainsi créer l'égalité 1-1.
Espérant bâtir sur ce succès, les Paladins ont maintenu la pression offensive en troisième manche. Une paire d'attaques marquantes hâtives de
Cameron Moar et deux autres de Tereszko, ont aidé le CMR à prendre les devants 5-3. Toutefois, le Bold a renversé la vapeur en inscrivant des points consécutifs pour se donner des priorités de 10-8 et de 15-12, avant de remporter cinq des six échanges suivants pour mener 20-13. Les locaux ont ainsi poursuivi sur leur lancée pour l'emporter 25-17.
Tentant de prolonger ce match en quatrième manche, le CMR a échangé les points avec le Bold, mais sans parvenir à prendre les devants. TMU menait 5-4 avant de remporter neuf des 12 échanges suivants et prendre les commandes avec une marque de 14-7. Gardant le cap, les hôtes ont accru leur écart à 18-10, forçant un temps d'arrêt des Paladins. Sans regarder derrière, le Bold a remporté la manche 25-13 et la rencontre.
À l'attaque, le joueur de centre Moar a disputé un gros match pour les Paladins, amassant 15,5 points et 13 attaques marquantes, des sommets chez les siens.
Andrew Gallant a dominé la rencontre avec 30 passes tandis que
Cedric Beaulieu a accumulé 13 récupérations.
Les Paladins seront de retour au SAM Gym le vendredi 24 novembre à l'occasion de la visite des Lancers de Windsor à compter de 19 h.
