The Paladins played against the visiting Trent Excalibur on Friday (Feb. 10) night. The Excalibur defeated RMC in a tightly contested five sets (25-18, 23-25, 26-24, 22-25, 6-15)
In the first set, RMC took a 5-3 lead off an L'Abbe ace and at 6-4 Trent called their first timeout. A few Trent points in a row caused Coach Joely Christian to call a timeout with the Paladins ahead 15-12. RMC retook a three point lead as Taryn Bender got a kill on the left side. The Paladins forced a Trent timeout at 20-16 as Sophie Hotte delivered another kill in the set. An Eve Smith block closed it out as the Paladins won it 25-18. RMC had 12 kills in the initial frame.
Both teams played tight in the second set as after thirty points, it was tied up at 15. WIth RMC leading 17-16, the Excalibur called their first timeout of the set. As the Excalibur started to fight back and with the score at 19 all, the Paladins initiated their first timeout. Coach Christian's timeout caused an immediate Trent service error. The two teams traded errors with a hitting error from the Excalibur giving RMC a 23-22 lead, which forced the second Trent timeout. A big kill from the Excalibur's Ashley Chartier made the score 23-23 and the Paladins called a timeout to stop the momentum. Back-to-back points gave the Excalibur the second set 25-23.
Trent got out to a 3-0 lead but the Paladins showed fight, pushing back right away and tying things up at five. A kill from Emilie L'Abbe and a hitting error by Trent gave the Paladins a two-point advantage at 12-10, forcing Trent's first timeout. Ashley Raymond's fifth kill gave the Paladins a four point lead at 16-12. Two straight kills from the Excalibur tied the score at 18, and RMC called their first timeout of the third. RMC won a very long rally off a Eve Smth kill to take a 21-20 advantage. A double block from Trent gave them the 23-22 lead and led to an RMC timeout. A Trent serving error occurred right after so the Excalibur took a timeout to calm the RMC momentum. The same timeout magic then worked for the Excalibur, causing an RMC serving error. Jenna Trudeau came off the bench to deliver an ace down the line for the 25-24 lead. RMC took the pivotal third set 26-24 as Trent's Natalie Fournier hit the ball out of bounds.
The Excalibur took an early lead at 9-4 off a couple RMC errors, which led to a Paladins timeout. A Raymond service ace reduced the Excalibur lead to one at 10-9, and they were forced to call a timeout. This didn't stop the Paladins as they got out to a 14-11 lead with Trent taking out their star hitter Fournier in the process. An ace and kill from Trent tied things up at 15 all. Sydney MacLellan's kill gave the Excalibur a 19-18 lead and RMC elected to call a timeout to stop a Trent surge. The Excalibur kept going however, eventually taking a two point lead in the latter stages. Trent used an ace to get it to 24-20 but two straight RMC points startled the Excalibur, leading to their second timeout. A service error from the Paladins gave Trent a 25--22 set four win.
The fifth set featured both teams giving their all as they were both looking for their first match win. Trent took the lead at 6-3, which caused a Paladins timeout. At the technical timeout, the Excalibur doubled up the Paladins at 8-4. Fournier notched her 18th kill to make it 9-4 for Trent. As the Trent lead moved to 10-4, the Paladins called their second and final timeout. The Excalibur could not be stopped in the fifth as they rode out to a 15-6 win and the match.
RMC was led by middle Sophie Hotte who had ten kills. L'Abbé and Bender were not far behind with nine each. Raymond had a team-high 19 digs, while L'Abbé delivered 20 assists.

En première manche, le CMR a pris les devants 5-3 grâce à un as au service de L'Abbé puis à 6-4, Trent a signalé son premier temps d'arrêt. Quelques points des visiteuses plus tard, l'entraîneur Joely Christian a pris un temps d'arrêt avec les Paladins devant 15-12. Le CMR s'est redonné une priorité de trois points quand Taryn Bender a réussi une attaque marquante du côté gauche. Les Paladins ont forcé un temps d'arrêt à 20-16 alors que Sophie Hotte a réussi une autre attaque marquante dans la manche. Un contre d'Eve Smith a conclu la manche initiale remportée 25-18 par les Paladins. Le CMR a amassé 12 attaques marquantes en première.
Les deux équipes ont offert du jeu serré en deuxième manche, comme l'indiquait l'égalité de 15-15 après 30 points. Le CMR a pris les devants 17-16, poussant l'Excalibur à prendre un premier temps d'arrêt dans la manche. Trent a commencé à remonter la pente, créant l'égalité 19-19 alors que les Paladins ont à leur tour pris un temps d'arrêt. Dès le retour, Trent a commis une erreur au service, puis les deux équipes ont bénéficié d'erreurs de l'autre pour conduire à une avance de 23-22 pour le CMR. Une grosse attaque marquante d'Ashley Chartier de l'Excalibur a créé l'égalité 23-23 puis les Paladins ont pris un temps d'arrêt pour interrompre leur rythme. À la reprise du jeu, l'Excalibur a inscrit les deux points suivants pour l'emporter 25-23.
Trent a démarré la troisième manche en prenant les devants 3-0, mais les Paladins ont démontré leur résistance en renversant la vapeur pour créer l'égalité 5-5. Une attaque marquante d'Emilie L'Abbé et une erreur offensive de Trent a procuré une avance de deux points aux Paladins (12-10), poussant Trent à prendre un temps d'arrêt. La cinquième attaque marquante de Raymond a accru l'avance des hôtes à quatre points (16-12). Deux attaques marquantes de l'Excalibur ont plus tard créé l'égalité 18-18 et le CMR a pris son premier temps d'arrêt de la troisième manche. Le CMR a remporté un très long échange de sur une attaque marquante d'Eve Smth pour prendre les devants 21-20. Un contre double de Trent leur a donné les devants 23-22 et a conduit à un autre temps d'arrêt du CMR. Une erreur au service de Trent a suivi et l'Excalibur a à son tir pris un temps d'arrêt pour clamer les ardeurs du CMR. Le vent a semblé tourner puisque le CMR a ensuite commis une erreur au service. Jenna Trudeau a ensuite été envoyée dans la mêlée et a réussi un as au service le long de la ligne pour donner les devants 25-24 au CMR, puis le point de la victoire dans cette troisième manche pivot a été inscrit en faveur des hôtes quand Natalie Fournier de Trent a frappé le ballon hors du terrain.
L'Excalibur a pris les devants 9-4 en quatrième manche, profitant d'erreurs du CMR et provoquant le premier temps d'arrêt des Paladins. Un as au service de Raymond est ensuite venu réduire l'écart à 10-9, forçant les visiteuses à prendre un temps d'arrêt. Cela n'a pas arrêté les Paladins, conduisant à une avance de 14-11, ce qui a eu l'effet de sortir l'attaquante étoile Fournier de Trent du terrain. Un as au service et une attaque marquante des visiteuses a créé l'égalité 15-15. Sydney MacLellan a inscrit une attaque marquante pour donner les devants 19-18 à l'Excalibur et le CMR a pris un temps d'arrêt pour empêcher Trent à s'échapper. L'Excalibur a toutefois gardé le cap, se donnant une priorité de deux points, puis un as au service pour faire 24-20, mais deux points consécutifs du CMR a poussé l'Excalibur à prendre un deuxième temps d'arrêt. C'est toutefois une erreur au service des Paladins a fait pencher la balance en faveur d'une victoire de 25-22 de Trent dans la manche.
La cinquième manche a vu les deux équipes donner tout ce qu'elles avaient dans le réservoir en quête d'une première victoire cette saison. Trent a pris les devants 6-3, poussant à un temps d'arrêt des Paladins. Au moment du temps d'arrêt technique, l'Excalibur doublait les Paladins 8-4. Fournier a réussi sa 18e attaque marquante, portant la marque à 9-4. Alors que Trent a ajouté un point pour faire 10-4, les Paladins ont pris leur deuxième et dernier temps d'arrêt. L'Excalibur ne pouvait plus être arrêté et a mis la main sur la cinquième manche 15-6 et le match au bris d'égalité.
Le CMR a été mené par Sophie Hotte, auteure de 10 attaques marquantes. L'Abbé et Bender n'étaient pas loin derrière avec neuf attaques marquantes chacune. Raymond a dominé les siennes avec 19 récupérations tandis que L'Abbé a ajouté 20 passes.
Les Paladins ont un dernier match à domicile à disputer, une fois de plus contre la formation de Trent. Ce match à l'occasion de la Journée des finissants sera disputé à compter de 13 h et pourra être suivi sur YouTube.com/RMCPaladinsTV.
