Looking to bounce back from a Friday defeat, the RMC Paladins returned to the SAM Gym Saturday afternoon to take on the Guelph Gryphons. Despite plenty energy and a desire to chase down every ball, the Paladins came up short, falling 3-0 (12-25, 9-25, 23-25).
Playing from behind for much of the contest last night, it was the Paladins making an early adjustment on Saturday, keeping the score close through the first handful of rallies. However, the Gryphons were then able to string a few points together and slowly start building a lead. Going up 10-6, Guelph continued to increase their lead, despite very scrappy play from the Paladins. Although they battled each rally, RMC would come up short, 25-12.
Unfortunately, for the home side, they were unable to generate much in the second set, with Guelph seemingly having an answer for everything they threw at them. With the Gryphons pulling away early, RMC called timeouts trailing 6-1 and 13-3, but were unable to slow the momentum, as Guelph cruised to a 25-9 win.
Despite having dropped the first two sets, that did not dampen the Paladin's spirit as they showed tremendous resiliency in the third, looking to prolong the match. Going back and forth with the Gryphons, the Paladins did not allow Guelph to pull away at all in the third. With both sides staying within a couple of points of each other throughout the set, there was very little separating the two. With the score tied 22-22 late, RMC continued to fight, but in the end, it was Guelph winning three of the next four points to finish of a 25-23 win.
For the Paladins,
Elisa Markentin led the attack with five kills.
Emilie Boileau finished the match with a team-high 11 assists, while Markentin finished with a team-high in digs with six.
The Paladins will now be off the court for much of the workweek before returning to action on January 19 when they host the Trent Excalibur. Game time is at 1800 hrs.
L'équipe féminine de volleyball des Paladins du CMR cherchait à égaliser sa série de deux matchs en deux jours à domicile contre les Gryphons de Guelph samedi après-midi au SAM Gym. Malgré toute l'énergie déployée et le désir de lutter pour chaque ballon, les Paladins se sont inclinées en trois manches (12-25, 9-25, 23-25).
En retard au pointage pendant la majeure partie de la rencontre de vendredi soir, les Paladins ont ajouté le tir samedi et ont maintenu le pointage serré dans les premiers échanges de la rencontre. Les Gryphons sont toutefois parvenues à coller quelques points pour créer un écart. En avant 10-6, Guelph a accru son avance malgré la hargne des Paladins. Dans le coup sur chaque échange, les Paladins ont quand même perdu la manche initiale 25-12.
Malheureusement pour les locales, elles n'ont pas été en mesure de générer grand-chose en deuxième manche alors que Guelph trouvait réponse à toutes les tentatives du CMR. Le CMR a pris ses temps d'arrêt avec des retards de 1-6, puis de 3-13, ne parvenant pas à stopper l'allure des visiteuses qui ont eu le dessus 25-9.
Malgré la situation, les Paladins ont fait preuve de beaucoup de résilience en troisième manche pour tenter de prolonger ce match, ne permettant pas aux Gryphons de s'enfuir. L'écart étant maintenu au minimum, cette dernière manche a donné lieu à du jeu plus serré. À égalité 22-22, le CMR a tenu son bout, mais Guelph a remporté trois des quatre échanges suivants pour gagner 25-23.
Chez les Paladins, Elisa Marketin a mené l'effort offensif avec cinq attaques marquantes.
Emilie Boileau a accumulé 11 passes tandis que Marketin a ajouté six récupérations.
Les Paladins devront maintenant attendre à vendredi prochain avant de disputer leur prochain match, à l'occasion de la visite de l'Excalibur de Trent à compter de 18 h.
