Seeking their first win of the season, the RMC Paladins came within five points of that goal Friday night at the SAM Gym. Playing host to the Trent Excalibur, the Paladins dropped a heart-breaking five-set contest 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 10-15).
Falling behind early in the opening set, the Paladins were able to right the ship midway through, as they pulled even through the teens and even take a narrow lead at 15-14. After going up 22-20 late in the set, the Paladins looked poised to take the first set, but the Excalibur were able to bounce back and secure five of the next six points and win the set 25-23.
Determined not to dwell on the first set, RMC battled through a very tight second set. Tied early, RMC began to open a bit of an advantage near the midway point. Holding a 12-9 lead, the Paladins forced Trent into a timeout. Although they were unable to establish a large lead, RMC was still able to keep themselves ahead and even the match 1-1, winning the set 25-19.
As the pivotal third set got underway, it was Trent quickly jumping out in front and establishing control early. Going ahead 7-3, the Excalibur further built their lead up to 18-10. Despite the score, the Paladins were able to work their way back into the set going on an 8-4 run, forcing a Trent timeout at 22-18. Following the pause, the visitors were able to get themselves sorted and finish off the set 25-20.
Finding themselves in some trouble midway through the fourth set, RMC trailed Trent 16-13 with the match on the line. Then trailing 20-16, the Paladins managed to turn it on. Winning five of the next six points, the Paladins tied the set 21-21. From there, RMC continued to fight off the Excalibur and force a fifth set, 25-23.
Trying to carry their momentum over from their come-from-behind fourth set win, the Paladins were unsuccessful in doing so as Trent won the first seven points in the race to 15. RMC did their best to fight their way back into the set, however, the early hole proved too much as the Paladins fell 15-10.
Doing everything he could to will his team to victory,
Cameron Moar registered 20 kills in the match.
Andrew Gallant finished the match with a team-high 40 assists, while
Maciej Tereszko led the team in digs with nine.
Getting the chance to quickly bounce back, the Paladins will once again take on Trent on January 20 in the SAM Gym. Game time is scheduled for 1600 hrs.
En quête d'une première victoire cette saison, les Paladins du CMR sont passés à cinq points de leur objectif vendred soir au SAM Gym. À l'occasion de la visite de l'Excalibur de Trent, les Paladins ont subi une défaite crève-cœur en cinq manches (23-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-23 et 10-15).
Tirant de l'arrière tôt dans la manche initiale, les Paladins ont su redresser la barre à mi-chemin, créant l'égalité avant de prendre les devants 15-14. Après avoir mené 22-20 en fin de manche, les Paladins semblaient en voie de l'emporter, mais l'Excalibur s'est resaisi pour marquer cinq des six points suivants et gagner 25-23.
Déterminé à ne pas se laisser abattre, le CMR s'est démené dans une deuxième manche très serrée. À égalité en début de manche, le CMR s'est créé un coussin à mi-chemin. Menant 12-9, les hôtes ont forcé Trent à prendre un temps d'arrêt. Incapable de creuser l'écart, le CMR est quand même parvenu à rester devant pour créer l'égalité en remportant cette deuxième manche 25-19.
Alors que l'importante troisième manche s'est mise en branle, Trent a rapidement pris les devants et le contrôle de la manche. Menant d'abord 7-3, Trent a poussé l'écart à 18-10. Malgré la marque, les Paladins se sont replacés en gagnant huit des 12 points suivants, forçant Trent à prendre un temps d'arrêt avec une avance de 22-18. La pause a eu l'effet escompté pour les visiteurs qui ont retrouvé le nord et conclu la manche sur un gain de 25-20.
En difficulté en milieu de quatrième manche, le CMR tirait de l'arrière 13-16 avec le match sur la ligne. En retard 16-20, les Paladins sont quand même arrivés à renverser la vapeur en remportant cinq des six points suivants pour créer l'égalité 21-21. De là, le CMR a continué de résister aux charges de l'Excalibur pour gagner 25-23 et provoquer une cinquième et ultime manche.
Tentant de maintenir le cap dans la foulée de leur remontée victorieuse à la manche précédente, les Paladins n'ont toutefois pas joué à la hauteur de leurs ambitions alors que Trent a remporté les sept premiers points. Le CMR a fait de son mieux pour revenir dans la rencontre, mais le retard de début de manche était trop imposant pour les Paladins qui ont perdu 10-15.
Cameron Moar a déployé tous les efforts pour amasser 20 attaques marquantes dans la rencontre.
Andrew Gallant a conclu le duel avec 40 passes tandis que
Maciej Tereszko a été le meilleur des siens avec neuf récupérations.
Les Paladins auront l'occasion de rebondir rapidement puisqu'ils accueillent Trent à nouveau le samedi 20 janvier à compter de 16 h au SAM Gym.
