Playing their second match of a weekend back-to-back, the RMC Paladins returned to the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre Saturday afternoon. Looking to bounce back from Friday's loss, Saturday turned out to be a tough day at the office for RMC, as no matter what they tried, the Gryphons seemed to have an answer, as RMC fell 3-0 (11-25, 19-25, 10-25).
From the start, the Paladins found themselves trying to play catch-up. With Guelph winning the first four points of the match, the Gryphons were able to create early separation. Building on that lead, Guelph would extend their advantage to 9-3, forcing a Paladins timeout. However, nothing seemed to slow the Gryphon's momentum, with Guelph going up 18-8, before finishing off the set 25-11.
In the second set, the Gryphons were once again able to jump out in front early on. This time though, RMC was able to find a few answers and work their way back into the set. Trailing 7-3, the Paladins but together a couple of small runs, trimming the Guelph lead to 10-9. However, the Paladins had a hard time slowing down Guelph from that point, with the Gryphons winning nine of the next 11 points. That run proved to be too big a mountain for the Paladins to climb. Although RMC made a late 4-1 run, it was not enough, dropping the set 25-19.
The beginning of the third set saw the Gryphons take control quickly, jumping out to a 9-1 lead. From there, the Paladins tried multiple times to get back into the set but were unable to string much together. Guelph would ultimately continue to roll throughout the set, winning it 25-10.
Leading the Paladins on the stat sheet, Ashely Raymond finished the contest with six kills.
Jayda Phillipson had a team-high 14 assists, with
Lilie Demelo leading the team in digs with 10.
RMC will now wrap up the 2024 portion of their regular season when they head to Western for two matches with the Mustangs on November 29 and 30.
À leur deuxième match en deux jours ce weekend, les Paladins du CMR étaient de retour au Centre sportif des Gryphons de Guelph, samedi après-midi. Cherchant à rebondir après la défaite de vendredi, ce deuxième match a été un peu compliqué pour le CMR. Peu importe les efforts déployés, les Paladins n'ont pas su rivaliser avec les Gryphons, s'inclinant en trois manches (11-25, 19-25, 10-25).
Dès le départ, les Paladins ont joué du volleyball de rattrapage. Guelph a remporté les quatre premiers échanges du match pour se créer un coussin tôt dans la rencontre. Bâtissant sur cette avance, Guelph a prolongé cette avance à 9-3, forçant un temps d'arrêt des Paladins. Cependant, rien n'a semblé ralentir le rythme des Gryphons, en avant 18-8 avant de l'emporter 25-11.
En deuxième manche, les Gryphons ont été une fois de plus en mesure de prendre les devants dès le début. Toutefois, le CMR a été en mesure de répliquer cette fois et de revenir au pointage. En retard 8-3, les Paladins ont remporté six des neuf échanges qui ont suivi pour réduire l'avance de Guelph à un seul point (10-9). Les Paladins ont toutefois eu de la difficulté à ralentir Guelph à partir de ce moment. Les Gryphons ont gagné neuf des 11 points suivants, pour mener 19-11. Cette séquence s'est avérée fatale pour les Paladins. Bien qu'ils aient remporté quatre points sur cinq échanges en fin de manche, ils se sont inclinés 25-19.
Les Gryphons ont démarré la troisième manche en force, prenant les devants 9-1. À partir de là, les Paladins ont tenté plusieurs fois de revenir au pointage, mais ils ont été incapables de réaliser de séquences de points. Guelph a ainsi donc continué de passer le rouleau compresseur, l'emportant 25-10.
