With just two more road trips remaining on their 2023-24 OUA schedule, the RMC Paladins were in North Bay, Ont., Saturday afternoon to take on the Nipissing Lakers in the first of two weekend matches. After making a strong push in the opening set, the Paladins were unable to solve Nipissing the rest of the way, falling 3-0 (22-25, 11-25, 13-25).
Despite the travel, the Paladins showed no signs of bus-legs early on against the Lakers. As the opening set got underway, RMC was able to play from in front for much of the first half. Holding leads at 9-6 and 13-10, the Paladins quickly establishes some momentum. Nipissing would begin to push back though. Getting the opening set tied 14-14, the Lakers would continue to apply pressure winning five of the next seven rallies for a 19-16 lead. RMC would battle back and even the set at 21-21, but from there, Nipissing would go on to finish off the opener 25-22.
Unfortunately, for RMC, the second set got away from them early on. Came out on the attack, Nipissing was able to quickly strike for a 6-0 advantage before extending it all the way to 23-4. Although a large hill to climb, that didn't stop the Paladins from trying. Winning seven of eight points, RMC did not go quietly, but would be defeated 25-11.
The third set, although not to the same extent, also proved difficult for the Paladins. Again, it was the home team taking control early on and forcing the issue for RMC. Up 6-2, Nipissing was able to extend that lead to 14-6, before going up 21-10. From there, the Lakers would finish of the match with a 25-13 third set win.
With seven kills,
Eve Smith led the charge for RMC.
Cassidy Chang finished with a team-high 11 assists, while
Mackenzie Lockett-Hiemstra led the Paladins in digs with nine.
RMC will return to the court in North Bay on February 11, when they finish off their two-game set with Nipissing. First serve is set for 1200 hrs.
Avec seulement deux matchs à jouer en déplacement à leur calendrier régulier 2023-2024 des SUO, les Paladins du CMR étaient à North Bay samedi après-midi pour y affronter les Lakers de Nipissing dans le premier de deux matchs ce weekend. Après avoir tenu tête à leurs hôtes en première manche, les Paladins n'ont pas été en mesure de se relever, s'inclinant en trois manches (22-25, 11-25 et 13-25).
Malgré le long voyage en autobus, les joueuses des Paladins ne semblaient pas avoir de fourmis dans les jambes en première manche, prenant les devants dès le départ. En avant 9-6 et 13-10, les Paladins ont rapidement donné le ton au match. Nipissing a ensuite réagi, créant l'égalité 14-14. Les Lakers ont maintenu la pression en remportant cinq des sept échanges suivants pour prendre les devants 19-16. Le CMR a répliqué pour créer l'égalité 21-21, mais Nipissing a fermé les livres sur la manche initiale en remportant quatre des cinq points suivants pour gagner 25-22.
Malheureusement pour le CMR, la deuxième manche leur a échappé assez tôt. Agressives, les joueuses de Nipissing se sont procuré une avance de 6-0 avant de la prolonger à 23-4. Malgré l'énorme déficit à combler, les Paladins ont continué de travailler, remportant sept des huit points suivants. Cependant, il n'a fallu qu'un échange gagnant aux locales pour ensuite l'emporter 25-11.
La troisième manche a aussi été difficile pour les Paladins, bien que pas aussi ardue pour les Paladins. Une fois de plus, l'équipe hôte a pris le contrôle de l'engagement pour se donner une avance de 6-2. Nipissing a ainsi poursuivi pour mener 14-6 et 21-10, pour finalement l'emporter 25-13 et mettre fin à la rencontre.
Avec sept attaques marquantes,
Eve Smith a été la meilleure du côté du CMR samedi, tout comme
Cassidy Chang et ses 11 passes et
Mackenzie Lockett-Hiemstra avec ses neuf récupérations.
Le CMR sera de retour sur le terrain dimanche à compter de 12 h à North Bay pour conclure cette série de deux rencontres face à Nipissing.
