Despite having to make the lengthy trip to Thunder Bay, Ont., and finding themselves in a two-set deficit Friday night, that didn't stop the RMC Paladins from finding a way to pick up their first victory of the season. In what is their final weekend of OUA play, the Paladins fought for a 3-2 (18-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-13) win.
Looking to get their legs underneath them as the match got underway, the Paladins found themselves falling behind early, going down 6-1 to Lakehead. Later trailing 11-6, RMC began to battle their way back into the set, narrowing the gap to 13-12. Trailing 15-14, the Paladins were going stride for stride with the home team, however, the Thunderwolves would start to pull away. Winning six of the next eight rallies, Lakehead restored their five-point lead, going ahead 21-16. Cruising from there, Lakehead would take the opening set 25-18.
With very little separating the two teams as the second set got underway, it was Lakehead once again that was able to build up the first lead of the set. The two sides would go back and forth for the first hand full of points until the Thunderwolves strung a few points together, going up 11-6. Getting right back into the set, the Paladins would go on to win nine of the next 12 points, pulling ahead 15-14. Tied 20-20, Lakehead would start to take control, taking a 24-21 lead, before securing the set on the next point.
With their back against the wall trailing two sets to none, the Paladins never quit. Falling behind 8-4 early in the set, RMC would call a timeout, and quickly get themselves back on track winning three straight points. Continuing to build on their momentum, the Paladins would force a Lakehead timeout after taking a 14-11 lead. The Paladins would surrender the lead at 19-18, but once again, would fight back. After tying the set multiple times, RMC would trail 23-22 late. Two points away from defeat, the Paladins flipped the script winning three straight points and forcing a fourth set.
For the fourth consecutive set, the two sides were once again going back and forth in the early stages. With neither side building a lead bigger than three points, the Paladins would go on to take their first advantage of the set at 13-12. RMC would later force Lakehead into a timeout after extending their lead to 17-13. Following a brief push from the Thunderwolves, narrowing the Paladins lead to 20-19, RMC would take control winning five of the next six rallies and take the set 25-20.
One set away from the first win of the season, the young Paladins squad continued to go back and forth with Lakehead. Trailing the Thunderwolves 8-7 at the switch, RMC would tie the set 9-9, before taking a 10-9 lead. Going up 14-11, the Paladins were on the verge of victory. Although Lakehead would win two straight points to pull within one of RMC. However, after a lengthy rally, the Paladins would secure their first win of the season on a Lakehead attack error.
Helping guide RMC to victory,
Ashley Raymond had 14 kills for the Paladins. Cassisy Chang finished the contest with a match-high 34 assists, while
Emilie Boileau had a match-high 16 digs.
The Paladins will now conclude their season on February 17, when they take on the Thunderwolves for the second time in as many nights. First serve is set for 1900.

Très peu de choses ont séparé les deux équipes en deuxième manche, mais Lakehead a une fois de plus pris l'initiative au pointage. Grâce à une séquence de points après une série d'échanges partagés, les Thunderwolves menaient 11-6. Les Paladins ont toutefois remporté neuf des 12 échanges suivants pour se donner une priorité de 15-14. À égalité 20-20, Lakehead a repris le contrôle pour mener 24-21 et remporter le match sur l'échange suivant.
Le dos au mur, les Paladins n'ont jamais abandonné. Tirant de l'arrière 8-4 au début de la troisième manche, le CMR a pris un temps d'arrêt et s'est remis sur les rails en remportant les trois échanges suivants. Bâtissant sur ce rythme, les Paladins ont forcé Lakehead à prendre un temps d'arrêt alors qu'elles ont pris les devants 14-11. Lakehead a renversé la vapeur pour prendre les devants 19-18, mais les visiteuses n'avaient pas dit leur dernier mot. En retard 23-22, les Paladins ont remporté les trois échanges suivants pour pousser le match vers une quatrième manche.
Pour une quatrième manche de suite, les deux équipes se sont échangé les points en début d'engagement. Avec un écart qui n'a jamais dépassé trois points entre les équipes, les Paladins ont pris les devants 13-12 et poussant leur avance à 17-13 pour forcer Lakehead à prendre un temps d'arrêt. Après une légère réaction des Thunderwolves qui a réduit l'avance de CMR à 20-19, les visiteuses ont remporté cinq des six échanges suivants pour l'emporter 25-20.
À un bris d'égalité près de remporter un premier match cette saison, la jeune équipe des Paladins a échangé les points avec Lakehead, mais ces dernières menaient 8-7 au changement de côté. RMC a renversé la machine pour prendre les devants 10-9 et 14-11. À un point de la victoire, les Paladins ont dû patienter puisque Lakehead a remporté deux points de suite pour réduire l'écart à un seul point. Au terme d'un long échange qui a suivi, les Paladins ont confirmé leur premier gain de la saison à la suite d'une erreur à l'attaque de Lakehead.

Les Paladins concluront leur saison régulière le samedi 17 février à 19 h contre les Thunderwolves pour leur deuxième match en autant de soirs contre leurs rivales de Thunder Bay.
