Looking to find their way into the win column, the RMC Paladins made the trip to Peterborough on Tuesday for their second meeting of the season with the Trent Excalibur. Despite what was a close match, the Paladins would come up short in the end, losing 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 33-35).
Early on, it was RMC getting off to a fast start in the first set. Going on an 8-1 run, the Paladins were able to take an 8-4 lead over Trent. The advantage was short-lived however, as the Excalibur responded with a 10-2 run of their own, turning the four-point RMC lead into four-point Trent lead. Following a push from the Paladins, the two teams began going back and forth. Although RMC was able to pull within one point a couple of times, that would be as close as they would get, falling 25-23.
Trying to bounce back in the second, the Paladins would once again take an early lead. Winning five of the first eight points, the Paladins went up 5-3. However, it was not long after when Trent began to flip the momentum. With RMC leading 11-10, the Excalibur went on a run to take a 16-12 advantage. Able to fight off any Paladin pushes the rest of the way, Trent would take the set 25-20.
Not going down without a fight, the Paladins battled all through the third set. Rewarded for their efforts, RMC was able to build up a 17-13 advantage in the set, and appeared to be on their way to forcing a fourth. However, leading 24-19, the Paladins were unable to put away the Excalibur, who won five straight points to tie the set 24-24. Despite the Trent comeback, the Paladins continue to keep themselves alive. RMC fought off seven consecutive match points, to prolong the set. At 34-33 Trent though, the Excalibur would finally break through to finish off the set and the match.
First-year left-side,
Tommy Roussel continued his strong campaign on Tuesday, leading the team in kills with 17.
Andrew Gallant had a team-high 32 assists, while Gallant, Roussel and
Carter Liu each recorded a team-high seven digs.
The Paladins will now have the weekend off before heading to Windsor on January 24.
Cherchant à retrouver le chemin de la victoire, les Paladins du CMR se sont déplacés du côté de Peterborough mardi pour leur deuxième duel de la saison contre l'Excalibur de Trent. Malgré ce qui a été un match serré, les Paladins ont perdu en trois manches (23-25, 20-25 et 33-35).
Le CMR avait pourtant connu un solide début de rencontre. Marquant huit points sur neuf échanges, le les visiteurs ont pris les devants 8-4. Cet avantage a été de courte durée puisque l'Excalibur a remporté 10 des 12 échanges suivants, transformant son retard de quatre points par une avance de quatre points. Après une réplique des Paladins, les deux équipes se sont échangées point pour point. Bien que le CMR s'est approché à un point d'écart de nombreuses fois, il n'a pas su renverser la vapeur, s'inclinant 25-23.
Poussant pour créer l'égalité en deuxième manche, les Paladins ont une fois de plus pris les devants dans ce deuxième engagement, remportant cinq des huit premiers échanges pour mener 5-3. Ce n'est toutefois que peu de temps après que Trent a commencé à changer le rythme du jeu. Alors que le CMR menait 11-10, l'Excalibur a répliqué pour prendre les devants 16-12. Répliquant à toutes les attaques des Paladins, Trent a remporté la deuxième manche 25-20.
Ne baissant pas les bras, les Paladins ont lutté en troisième manche. Récompensés pour ses efforts, le CMR a menait 17-13 et semblait bien en voie de forcer la tenue d'une quatrième manche. Cependant, malgré une avance de 24-19, les Paladins n'ont pas été en mesure de marquer le point qui leur manquait à ce moment et l'Excalibur a inscrit cinq points de suite pour créer l'égalité 24-24. Malgré cette remontée de Trent, les Paladins sont restés au plus fort de l'action, résistant à sept points de match consécutifs afin de prolonger la manche. Menant 34-33, l'Excalibur a finalement eu le dernier mot pour conclure la manche et la rencontre.
L'attaquant de gauche recrue
Tommy Roussel a poursuivi son excellent début de parcours menant l'équipe avec 17 attaques marquantes.
Andrew Gallant a dominé les siens avec 32 passes tandis que Gallant, Roussel et
Carter Liu ont chacun accumulé sept récupérations.
Les Paladins profiteront d'un weekend de congé avant de mettre le cap sur Windsor pour y affronter les Lancers le vendredi 24 janvier.
