Returning to the court for the first time since November 30, the RMC Paladins picked up their second win of the season Tuesday evening in Peterborough. Using a well-balanced attack, the Paladins defeated Trent in three sets, taking the match 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-22).
Although the Paladins found themselves trailing early on in the opening set, RMC was able to make the adjustments needed midway through the set. Going on a 7-1 run, RMC was able to turn a four-point deficit into a 15-13 lead. Despite the set remaining close the rest of the way, and Trent even taking a lead late a 22-21, the Paladins persevered taking four of the last five points to win the set 25-23.
Beginning the second set, the Paladins went point for point with the Excalibur, and although neither side built much of an advantage, RMC was able to stay within striking distance. Then with the score tied 14-14, RMC began to make their move. Taking seven of the next eight points, the Paladins opened up a 21-15 lead, before finishing off the set 25-19.
Looking to earn their first sweep of the season, the RMC quickly got to work in the third. Jumping out to an 11-5 advantage, the Paladins were able to create some breathing room. Although six points was as big of a lead as they would create, the Paladins were able to fend of each of Trent's attacks. Maintaining at least a two-point lead the rest of the way, RMC would finish of the match with a 25-22 third set win.
With 10 kills,
Elisa Markentin led the way for RMC offensively.
Jayda Phillipson recorded a match-high 27 assists, while Markentin would lead both teams in digs with 12.
RMC will now go for a second straight victory on January 24 when they visit the Windsor Lancers.
