Hitting the court to begin their 2025-26 OUA campaign, the RMC Paladins made their way to Peterborough for a date with the Trent Excalibur. Although they were able to take a two sets to one lead, the Paladins saw Trent battle back to win the match 3-2 (19-25, 27-25, 25-21, 24-26, 15-12).
Getting their feet underneath them in the beginning, the Paladins had a tough time generating much in terms of momentum. Throughout the set, it was the Excalibur who were able to put together multiple runs. Holding the lead for much of the set, Trent was able to cruise to a 25-19 win.
From the very beginning of the second set, neither team was able to create much separation. As the two sides continued to go back and forth, the Paladins managed to put together a late run with the set tied 19-19. Taking five of the next seven points, RMC took a favourable 24-21 lead. Although they were unable to finish off the set right away, they were able to ultimately win the set 27-25.
In the third, RMC was able to create some separation in the early stages. Going up 9-4, the Paladins were able to further extend the lead to 20-13. Taking advantage of that lead, the Paladins withstood a couple of small Trent runs en route to a 25-21 set victory and a two sets to one lead.
Determined to keep their momentum rolling, RMC came out swinging in the fourth, however, it was the Excalibur jumping out to an early 8-4. Unbothered by the deficit, the Paladins went on a an 8-0 run, taking a 12-8 lead. From that point on, the two sides went back and forth. RMC was able to pull within three points of victory, leading 22-19. The Excalibur fought back though with four consecutive points of their own. In the end, it was the home side finding a way to secure a 26-24 set win.
Like much of the match, the fifth set was very close as well. After exchanging points to start the set, it was Trent taking an 8-7 lead at the switch. The deciding set would be tied 11-11 a few points later, before the Excalibur were able to pull away for a 15-12 win.
Leading the attack for RMC, fourth-year outside hitter,
Ashley Raymond and third-year outside hitter,
Elisa Markentin recorded 15 kills each. Fourth-year setter,
Jayda Phillipson had 28 assists, while Markentin and third-year libero,
Tricia-Jane Ramirez tied for the team-high in digs with 15 each.
RMC will resume their season tomorrow (Oct. 25) with another match in Peterborough against Trent.
Sur les planches pour lancer leur saison 2025-2026 des SUO, les Paladins du CMR étaient en action à Peterborough pour un match face à l'Excalibur de Trent. Bien qu'ils aient été en mesure de remporter deux des trois premières manches, les visiteuses ont vu le match leur glisser entre les doigts, s'inclinant 3-2 (25-19, 25-27, 21-25, 26-24 et 15-12).
Les Paladins ont peiné à trouver leurs jambes de matchs en début de rencontre, ne parvenant pas à créer de rythme. Tout au long de la manche, l'Excalibur a su réaliser quelques séquences offensives pour mener pendant la première majeure partie en route vers un gain de 25-19.
Dès le début de la deuxième manche, ni une ni l'autre des équipes n'a su s'échapper. Les deux équipes se sont échangé les points et les Paladins y sont allés d'une séquence pour créer l'égalité 19-19. Remportant cinq de sept points suivants, le CMR a pris les devants 24-11. Il a fallu attendre les points de prolongation pour voir les Paladins l'emporter 27-25.
En troisième, le CMR s'est donné un petit cousin dès les premiers points. En avant 9-4, les Paladins ont prolongé l'avance 20-13. Profitant de ce pointage, les Paladins ont survécu à de petites poussées de Trent pour finalement gagner 25-21 et prendre les devants deux manches à une.
Déterminées à maintenir le rythme, les joueuses du CMR ont tout donné en début de quatrième manche, mais c'est l'Excalibur qui a pris les devants 8-4. Imperturbables malgré ce retard, les Paladins ont marqué les huit points suivants, prenant les devants 12-8. À partir de ce moment, les équipes se sont échangé les points et le CMR s'est approché à trois points de la victoire avec une avance de 22-19. L'Excalibur a toutefois renversé la vapeur avec quatre points de suite en route vers un gain de 26-24.
Un peu comme pour les quatre premières manches, la cinquième était très serrée. Après un échange de points en début d'engagement, Trent a pris les devants 8-7 au changement de côté. Le bris d'égalité s'est retrouvé avec une marque de 11-11 sept points plus tard, avant que l'Excalibur s'envole vers une victoire de 15-12.
L'attaquante de quatrième année du CMR
Ashley Raymond et sa coéquipière de troisième année Elisa Marketin ont mené la charge pour les Paladins avec 15 attaques marquantes chacune. La passeuse de quatrième année
Jayda Phillipson a amassé 28 passes, tandis que Markentin et la libéro de troisième année
Tricia-Jane Ramirez ont chacune réussi 15 récupérations.
Le CMR reviendra au jeu dès demain (samedi 25 octobre) avec un autre match à Peterborough contre Trent.
