Coming off their first win of the season on Saturday, the RMC Paladins knew it would be no easy task to make it two in a row on Friday night when they hosted the no. 4 nationally ranked Windsor Lancers. Although RMC would wind up losing 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 15-25, 20-25), the Paladins showed all night that they would not shy away from the challenge.
All through the first set very little separated the two sides. With RMC going back and forth with the Lancers, neither side was able to create much in terms of a lead. With hardly any disruptions during the set in terms of subs or timeouts, both teams just kept exchanging points. RMC would finally force the first timeout of the set once they reached set point at 24-22. Despite the Lancers timeout, it did little to slow down the Paladins, who finished off the set on the ensuing point.
Holding an early one-set lead over one of the best team in the country, the Paladins tried to double that advantage in the second. Able to play from ahead through much of the opening set, the same couldn't be said in the second. However, although they trailed through most of the set, RMC managed to stay within a couple of points the whole way through. Then in the late stages, the Paladins pulled within one, trailing 19-18. Windsor would quickly get the lead back up to three at 23-20 though, forcing RMC into a timeout. Despite battling, the Paladins couldn't quite make up the deficit, falling 25-22.
In the third, Windsor started to show why they are ranked so high. Taking control from the beginning, the Lancers built up an 11-6 lead, before extending it to 17-9. Not allowing RMC much of chance to get back into the set, Windsor would go on to win it 25-15.
Now trailing by a set and looking to force a fifth, the Paladins got right back to work. In a set that played out awfully similar to the second, RMC, although trailing, stayed within striking distance of Windsor the whole time. Like the second set, the Paladins found themselves within one point late, down 19-18. After a RMC timeout, Windsor would strike for three of the next four points, going up 22-19. From there the Lancers would put the finishing touches and a hard fought match, taking the fourth set 25-20.
Tommy Roussel led all Paladins on the attack with 14 kills.
Christian Patterson recorded the team-high in assists with 34, while Roussel and
Robert Chua tied for the team lead in digs with eight each.
Looking ahead, RMC will return to the SAM Gym tomorrow (November 8) for a second consecutive match with Windsor. Game time is scheduled for 1400hrs.
Après avoir signé leur première victoire de la saison, samedi dernier, les Paladins du CMR savaient qu'il ce ne serait pas facile de remporter un deuxième match de suite au moment d'accueillir l'équipe classée quatrième au pays, les Lancers de Windsor. Bien que le CMR ait fini par s'incliner 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 15-25 et 20-25), les Paladins ont montré tout au long de la soirée qu'ils ne craignaient pas de s'attaquer à un tel défi.
Tout au long de la première manche, l'écart est resté très mince entre les deux formations. Le CMR et les Lancers se sont tour à tour échangés l'initiative, si bien qu'aucune équipe n'a réussi à se bâtir une forte avance. Alors qu'il n'y a pratiquement eu aucune pause en raison de substitutions ou de temps d'arrêt, les deux côtés ont continué à récolter rapidement des points à tour de rôle. Le CMR a fini par forcer le premier temps d'arrêt de la manche au moment de se retrouver avec un point de manche à 24-22. Malgré ce temps d'arrêt des Lancers, les Paladins n'ont pas été ralentis, mettant fin à la manche en remportant le point suivant.
Détenteurs d'une avance d'une manche contre une des meilleures équipes au pays, les Paladins ont tenté de doubler cet avantage en deuxième manche. Après avoir assisté à une première manche disputée à bon rythme, on ne peut dire que ce fut encore le cas en deuxième manche. Bien qu'ils aient tiré de l'arrière pendant la majorité de cette manche, les Paladins sont parvenus à rester à deux points pendant un bon bout de temps. Puis, vers la fin de la manche, le CMR a réduit l'écart à un seul point (18-19) en faveur des Lancers. Windsor a vite retrouvé une priorité de trois points, 23-20, pour forcer les Paladins à demander un temps d'arrêt. Même s'ils ont bataillé ferme, les joueurs du CMR n'ont pas tout à fait réussi à renverser la vapeur, s'inclinant 25-22.
En troisième manche, Windsor a commencé à montrer pourquoi ils occupent un rang aussi élevé à l'échelle nationale. Prenant le contrôle dès le départ, les Lancers se sont dotés d'une avance de 11-6, pour ensuite l'accroître à 17-9. Ne donnant aucune occasion au CMR de revenir dans le coup, Windsor a fini par l'emporter 25-15.
Tirant maintenant de l'arrière par une manche et cherchant à provoquer la tenue d'une cinquième, les Paladins ont repris le boulot. À l'occasion d'une manche qui a beaucoup ressemblé à la deuxième, le CMR est resté à portée de Windsor. Comme en deuxième manche, les Paladins se sont retrouvés à un seul point d'écart vers la fin, tirant de l'arrière 19-18. À la suite d'un temps d'arrêt du CMR, Windsor a inscrit trois des quatre points suivants, prenant les devants 22-19. Les Lancers ont ensuite fini le travail et mis un terme à un match chaudement disputé, remportant la quatrième manche au compte de 25-20.

Christian Patterson a obtenu le total le plus élevé de passes de son équipe, soit 34, tandis que Roussel et
Robert Chua ont réalisé huit récupérations chacun.
Le CMR sera de retour au SAM Gym samedi (8 novembre) en vue d'un deuxième affrontement de suite contre Windsor. Le match commencera à 14 h 00.
