The men's soccer season began Friday night for the RMC Paladins. Making the trip to Ottawa, the Paladins came up short in their first game of the year, falling 3-0 to the Carleton Ravens.
RMC showed plenty of promise in the early stages of the match. Generating a few chances, while also creating some problems for the Ravens in the midfield, the Paladins were able to establish some control.
However, the match turned in Carleton's favour in the 38
th minute. With a ball played though towards the RMC box, third-year goalkeeper,
Finn Gregoire rushed out to play it. After he made contact with the ball, the referee ruled the hand contact was made outside of the box and Gregoire was issued a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.
After
Tyler Muller was subbed into the game to replace Gregoire, Carleton quickly converted on the ensuing free-kick from 20-yards out. The goal would hold up as the lone marker heading into the half.
Down to just 10-men for the remainder of the match, the Paladins did everything they could to keep up but it proved too much. Carleton would quickly open the match up with goals in the 54
th and 59
th minutes.
The Ravens would round out the scoring with one more goal in stoppage time.
Following a day off tomorrow, the Paladins will return to the pitch on 31 August when they host their home opener against the Queen's Gaels at 1515hrs.
La saison de l'équipe masculine de soccer des Paladins du CMR a démarré vendredi soir à Ottawa. Les Paladins n'ont toutefois pas trouvé le fond du filet dans ce match pour s'incliner 4-0 aux mains des Ravens de Carleton.
Le CMR a connu un début de rencontre prometteur, créant quelques occasions et des maux de tête en milieu de terrain pour les Ravens. Les Paladins ont ainsi été en mesure de dicter l'allure du jeu.
Cependant, le vent a tourné en faveur de Carleton à la 38e minute. Avec un ballon placé dans la surface du CMR, le gardien de troisième année
Finn Gregoire est sorti de sa ligne pour jouer le ballon. Après avoir fait contact avec le ballon, l'arbitre a jugé qu'une faute de main a été commise par le gardien à l'extérieur de sa zone et lui a décerné un carton rouge pour cette infraction qui a directement empêché une occasion de marquer.
Après que
Tyler Muller soit entré dans le match pour remplacer Gregoire, Carleton a rapidement converti le coup franc accordé sur une vingtaine de mètres. Ce but a été le seul de la première demie.
Réduits à 10 joueurs pour le reste de la rencontre, les Paladins ont tout fait ce qu'ils ont pu pour garder le rythme, mais la tâche s'est avérée trop ardue. Carleton a rapidement creusé l'écart en deuxième demie, marquant à la 54e minute, puis à la 59e.
Les Ravens ont complété la marque avec un autre but dans la reprise du temps arrêté.
Après une journée de congé samedi, les Paladins seront de retour au jeu le dimanche 31 août à l'occasion de leur match d'ouverture local face aux Gaels de Queen's à 15 h 15.
