With time of the essence and the Paladins, not only down a goal, but to 10-men as well, RMC was able to flip the script Saturday afternoon at Navy Bay Field. Hosting the Nipissing Lakers, the Paladins earned their first point since 9 October, 2022, thanks to
Rory Chapman's first career RMC goal, deep in stoppage time, earning the Paladins a 1-1 draw.
As the match got underway, there was plenty of opportunities for both sides. With the ball going back and forth, both team's goalkeepers, and defenders had to be sharp. Despite the opportunities, neither side was able to breakthrough, and it appeared it was going to stay that way into the halftime break. However, in the 43
rd minute, the Lakers would net the game's first goal off a scramble in front of the RMC goal.
Trailing by one as the second half got underway, the climb got to be a little steeper for the Paladins in the 57
th minute.
Michael Koka, the last defender back for RMC on a Nipissing rush, tried to prevent the scoring opportunity, but was shown a red card for his challenge, putting RMC down to 10-men.
Although down in numbers, the Paladins seemed unfazed. Getting big saves from goalkeeper
Finn Gregoire to keep them within one, RMC continued to push the ball the other way in search of the equalizer.
Into stoppage time still trailing by a goal, it appeared time was going to run out for the Paladins. However, in the last few moments,
Lionel Fotso Wafo sent a ball into the Nipissing box, and after it pinballed around, who settled on the foot of Chapman who hammered it into the back of the net.
Not long after, the final whistle would blow, securing RMC their first point of the season.
Gregoire went on to make seven saves for RMC in the draw.
Back on 9 October, 2022, the Paladins picked up a 3-0 win over the Trent Excalibur.
Trying to build off the momentum of the late equalizer, the Paladins will now hit the road as they head to Toronto on 3 October to take on the TMU Bold.
